MR WHIPPY    It’s been a long time since I’ve heard the chimes of an ice cream van pitching up in my neighbourhood. I miss the ice cream van, especially the Mr Whippy van! In the heyday years of the 1970s, there were about 250,000 ice cream vans in the UK. Now there are only about 500 ice cream vans on the road. Before entering politics, the former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher worked as a food research scientist for an ice cream manufacturer, J Lyons and Company. In her funeral address, the Bishop of London claimed that Margaret Thatcher was "part of the team that invented Mr Whippy ice-cream". Mr Whippy is a soft-serve, or aerated, ice cream. But the recipe for Mr Whippy was based on the recipe for Mister Softee made in America. It seems all Thatcher did was to pinch something from America and pass it off as her own idea! Watford’s Italian-born Paul Salamone, according to Guinness World Records, is the world’s longest serving ice cream man. He was an ice cream van man since 1965 until his retirement last year. After 50 years of dedicated service, he has served more than two million ice creams to customers. In 1980s' Glasgow, there was a violent turf war between rival criminal gangs, which was known as the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars. As well as ice cream, drugs and stolen goods could be bought from Glaswegian ice cream vans. When’s the last time you bought an ice cream from an ice cream van? My Grandad, when taking me on day trips to Colwyn Bay in North Wales, refused to buy me cornets and 99s, which are cornets with a chocolate flake stuck in, because I always ate the cone before the ice cream causing a big mess. This caused me problems as I was never a big fan of iced lollipops. Though I loved lollies, especially Strawberry Mivvis, I could not stand my teeth touching the lollipop’s wooden stick. It was like listening to someone scratching a chalk blackboard! Given that cornets, 99s and lollipops were off the menu on my Grandad’s day trips, I always had to make do with choc ices. My childhood was quite deprived!    |

When’s the last time you bought an ice cream from an ice cream van? I last had a ice cream for an ice cream van was when my daughter was a youngster- almost 12 years ago! I thought that Thatcher's main claim to ice cream notoriety was enabling the Mr Whippy ice cream to maintain its aerated nature in tubs, thus allowing a tub of ice cream to be "filled" with half the ice cream that was previously required. Or, looking at it another way, allowing ice cream companies to sell us air  Not really surprising she then became a milk-snatcher.. and then an all-round foofie.

I didn't know pig fat was used in soft serve ice cream. I'm surprised they don't sell bacon-flavoured ice cream ... I've just found out they do! [image]
