STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN Machu Picchu:  Huangshan:  Potemkin Stairs:  Chichen Itza:  Mount Niesen:  Above are some spectacular stairscapes – I think I’ve just made that word up! The first photograph shows some steps in Peru’s Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu was built for the Incan emperor, Pachacuti, in the middle of the fifteenth century but was abandoned following the Spanish Conquest a century later. The second photograph presents a staircase on the Huangshan mountains in eastern China. There are 8km of staircases, comprising about 60,000 steps, in this range of mounains. Some of the staircases are not for the faint-hearted to climb. Huangshan’s mountains appeared in the 2009 film, Avatar, as mountains floating amidst clouds. The third photograph depicts the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa, which I believe is still in Ukraine unless Putin has re-drawn Ukrainian boundaries again! The Potemkin Stairs featured in the classic 1925 film about the Russian Revolution, Battleship Potemkin. The fourth photograph is of Chichen Itza, a Mayan temple on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Chichen Itza is a fascinating place to visit as few people understand how and why the Mayan civilisation was wiped out. It was great to climb the many steps to the top of the temple because it was much cooler inside than outside the temple. The fifth photograph shows the world’s longest single staircase leading to the top of Mount Niesen in Switzerland. The staircase is 3.4 km long and consists of 11,674 steps. It is open to the public only one day in the year when the Niesenlauf race is held. The record for ascending the steps, the equivalent of climbing the Empire State Building more than seven times, is just over one hour! The most stairs I’ve climbed on a regular basis are the 193 steps in Covent Garden London underground station. The tube station has no escalators, only lifts and stairs. Given that Covent Garden is very popular with tourists, it was always quicker to take the stairs than the lift, but it meant climbing the equivalent of a 15-storey building. The things I do to allow tourists to take a lift! What’s the most stairs you’ve climbed? If given a choice of stairs or lift, what would you take? Have you ever had sex on stairs? I always take the stairs unless I take the lift (or elevator to my American friends)! For some, probably peculiar, reason I love having sex on the stairs. Stairs make for great positions for sex! Two or three stories, I'll take stairs. More than four, i'll use the lift, if there is one. Have you ever had sex on stairs? Yep! 1 - No idea - but I'm sure I haven't climbed the 1789 steps of the Eiffel Tower ... 2 - ... I took the lift ! I was too young to thimk about peeking under skirts, anyway. 3 - "Le meilleur moment est quand on monte l'escalier" (Clémencau). I think I've had. The last pic ? Looks like Italy, somehow ... or Provence.

You have forgotten the Phoenician Steps on the Isle of Capri 777 steps. There is an alternate path with a much more gradual ascent, most people opt to descend the Phoenician Steps. Except for my kids who nearly died of heat exhaustion before reaching the top, everyone was passing them on the way down and were offering various refreshments. It was quite hot as well, especially for two British kids. What’s the most stairs you've climbed? 1,576 steps, walked down, I am not sure you are allowed to climb to the top of the empire state building, or maybe we were lazy. 898 steps Washington Monument, walked down, definitely not allowed to walk up them. 377 steps to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, walked up, very slowly, cheek to cheek with them in front and those behind on the spiral staircase. 333 steps to the top of the Washington Cathedral, walked up. Finally 528 steps to the top Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, then went the wrong way round the top, because we didn't see that it was one way only! The sign was blocked. If given a choice of stairs or lift, what would you take? It's a toss up, I may do one or the other, unless I am with my daughter who is afraid of lifts. Have you ever had sex on stairs? I NEVER! should I? Maybe only with Hugh. Stairscapes is a great word, well done Hugh! I've scaled St Paul's Cathedral to the whispering gallery.
