HACKED OFF

Above is The Internet Messenger made by the Israeli sculptor Buky Schwartz. And below is my boring post that I started writing on Friday before getting distracted by nipples!

The Internet refers to a global system of interconnected computer networks; it’s a network of networks. Its history can be traced back to the 1960s with the development of computers.

The Internet was developed largely in the US and, to a lesser extent, in Britain and France. Amidst the Cold War, the US government wanted to create a robust and centre-less form of communication in case of a nuclear missile strike launched by the Soviet Union.

Even now, the Internet has no centralised governance. It is virtual anarchy with each network managing itself.

Like many military developments, the Internet gradually spread to the civilian world, first to the academic world in the 1980s and the business world in the 1990s. One of the reasons why the Internet hit academia before commerce was that many university libraries were already networked.

Now, nearly 40 per cent of the world’s population uses the Internet. Arguably the internet is one of the most significant human inventions.

I don’t know much about computers. It was only last year when the World Wide Web invented by the British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, celebrated its 25th birthday that I realised the Internet was not the same as the World Wide Web. I still don’t know what the difference is but I do know there is a difference between them!

The darknet consists of hard-to-find websites run by clandestine peer-to-peer networks often for nefarious, criminal and sometimes political purposes.

Darknet sites, so I’ve been told, are accessed via the Tor browser. Tor is an acronym for the onion routing principle where messages are wrapped by many layers of encryption.

Popular darknet sites are Silk Road 2.0, Agora and Evolution. It’s estimated that the darknet is up to 5,000 times larger than the net that search engines access!

The darknet was originally developed by the US military to guarantee anonymous communications, but the US military soon stopped using the darknet to communicate when everyone realised that it was the military using it!

How much do you know about the world of information and communications technology?
Have you ever accessed the darknet?
Does anyone have any updates on the hacking issue other than the nonsense peddled by this site?

At risk of being censored, I’m appalled, though not surprised, at how the site is handling the hacking issue. Lots of members’ personal data is now on the darknet.

Yesterday I contacted the site’s Customer Service Department for advice about this issue. Today I received its e-mailed reply suggesting I remove cookies from my computer!

This site has a very dark turn recently. Apart from the numerous and annoying glitches, the hacking issue is its darkest turn.

The site only informs its members that data has been hacked after the issue was reported by mainstream news outlets. It has failed to give any meaningful reassurance. Its statement - "Your account is not known to be affected at this time" - isn’t at all reassuring. And the site has failed to provide any updates on this hacking issue.

I’m hacked off with this site! In desperation, I’ve asked Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s President, to come to the site’s rescue; at least, members would be given some sweeteners for their continued support!

Have you ever accessed the darknet? no! Have no clue how to get there anyways..
Does anyone have any updates on the hacking issue other than the nonsense peddled by this site? I think it was hack worst then we first thought.. Sad part is if you used your credit card on this system it could be in the hands of someone else now.. Emails keep an eye on them as they most likely will have that information too.. Just sad the way they handle it hugssssssss V

The Internet, orginally called the Arpnet, consisted of links between UCLA, UCSB, University of Utah and Stanford. That's the reason that Universities were the next step in its expansion.

So what is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web? The Internet is a just the network of electronic connections between computers. Berner-Lee's innovation, the World Wide web, introduced two simple things that are commonplace today: hyperlinks and graphics.

Before the WWW, all interaction was text based. Even Internet porn was just dirty stories! If you wanted to do anything n the Internet, you had to type in a command telling the computer what to do. Berners -Lee figured out a way to create hyperlinks. That means that if you want to go from the blogs to the front page, all you have to do is click on the highlighted word. Also, he figured out a way to show pictures.

In short, the colorful, linkable, interactive space most of us go when we long on is the WWW. The Internet is the engine that runs underneath it.

There are actually a few pathways to the Darknet, it's not something the average person could stumble onto. Yes, there's a lot of nefarious activity but there is also a lot of innovation and social activism as well .

In terms of the hacking thing, it's only an issue for a tiny, minority of people on this site; I wrote a rather long blog about. it. The primary problem is not with the company or the technology but with the end users, we are our own biggest problem. During the investigation, they found that people were using work email address, the same credit cards they use everyday and screen names that identify people's names and places.

People are idiots; they put themselves at risk and then moan when they get cyber-mugged.

The important thing to remember is (a) very few of us here are important enough to be at risk of blackmail or extortion but our emails are like gold. People need to (a)use a burner email account; (b)have a dedicated (pre-paid or not) credit card for use on-line; (c)Pick a screen name that doesn't give away personal details; (d)assume that any pic you post anywhere on the Internet can be seen by anybody at any time.

Hope this answers some of your questions

When I started reading this post, I was much less informed than I'm now.

This post and comments by sabrina_xxx_2 and BrownEyedBBW provided much information, opened my eyes on Dark net and some other things.

Thank you.

I wrote my first computer program in elementary school, just a few days after my Catholic school got Apple IIe's. (Public schools got TRS (trash) 80's.) The schools had no idea what to do with them, I just read the basic instruction manuals. I learned to type. (Sorta, in my own way.)

In college I did my computer science homework with a modem connection to the school and had access to gopher. .. In another life, I would have followed a career into computers.

As far as the darknet goes, I know that I can easily access pirate file sharing sites to watch movies and things, but I don't do it. (I know of the other things from what I've seen on the news.)

This site really is my private refuge, but I'm not a valuable target to anyone either.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

How much do you know about the world of information and communications technology? I used to know a fair bit. I forget a little bit more everyday. I Taught computer classes at the library, very basic stuff. I have owned computers since the early 80s. Presently, I own, 3 desktops and four laptops, we actually use only one of the desktops but all four of laptops. I plan to hook up another desktop today, because I want to use some of the programs on it. I have friends and family calling me as their personal IT person I do tell them I haven't kept up with everything and they really shouldn't be asking me to sort them out.

Have you ever accessed the darknet? Not intentionally, I have accessed my dark side recently.

Does anyone have any updates on the hacking issue other than the nonsense peddled by this site? Sorry I do not. I am rather glad the site doesn't have my financial information. A hacker in Beijing once stole $6000 from me in three days, it took months to resolve the issue and have another credit card issued. I was told my cc number was stolen just by generating random numbers until the correct combination was hit upon to access my account.
I just have one PC that is my perv station in my study!

I use a debit card to pay for this site's membership. I guess I should now cancel the card!
