ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS BEATS POKER

I’m not a gambler. I occasionally go to the races and I’ve been to a casino a few times. The last time I went to a casino, I was thrown out for wearing ripped jeans, which was a bit rich given what was going on in the casino at the time. They weren’t playing poker, though he was playing poke-her!

One game I do like playing for stakes is rock-paper-scissors. Sex, not money, is the stake for this game. Each player writes down a sexual act that they’d like and, after a best-of series, the loser performs the winner’s request. It’s a great sex game.

Rock-paper-scissors is what’s called a zero-sum game in that there’s a winner and a loser. Both players can’t lose (as in a negative-sum game) or win (as in a positive-sum game).

Rock-paper-scissors is often perceived as a random game, but it’s not because people aren’t random. The key to win this game is to identify your opponent’s non-random behaviour. We all have patterns of behaviour.

Rock-paper-scissors originated in Asia, probably China but maybe Japan, and gradually spread to Europe and America. Now there are many rock-paper-scissors tournaments across the world. And many algorithms have been developed to play the game.

Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. It seems a one in three chance to win but it’s not one in three in a real game.

One way of winning is through trash talk by saying what your hand is going to do before your hand reveals after the count to three. If you do this, always do what you said you’d do! This is sometimes effective but it’s cheap!

Other ways are winning are by studying form. The World Rock-Paper-Scissors Society (yes, it does exist) has found that 35.4% tournament players lead with rock, 35% lead with paper and 29.6% lead with scissors. This tells you to play paper at tournaments!

But most of us don’t have rock-paper-scissors tournament experience, so here are eight tips to give you an edge in winning a rock-paper-scissors game:
1. If playing against a novice man, assume he’ll start with rock so start with paper
2. If playing against a novice woman, assume she’ll start with scissors so start with rock
3. If playing against an experienced player, lead with scissors
4. Assume what your opponent threatens to play in advance is what they will play, so react accordingly
5. Watch your opponent’s hand before they reveal their hand and, if their thumb is tucked, it suggests they’re more likely to play rock so you play paper
6. Given everyone is watching for patterns, be deliberately random - random will always beat non-random over time
7. If in doubt what to play, lead with paper and lead again with paper
8. If very desperate to win, cheat - engage in conversation with your opponent on offbeat topics such as the weather; take regular toilet breaks to really annoy your opponent; delay revealing your hand until you see your opponent’s hand; feign momentary blindness and deafness during the game; and, most effective, reveal you hand in a shape that confusingly looks like a rock, a sheet of paper and a pair of scissors!

In 2005, the Japanese company Maspro Denkoh Corporation challenged two leading auction houses, Christie’s and Sotheby’s, to play the game of rock-paper-scissors for the right to sell the company’s art collection, which included works of Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.

Sotheby’s assumed the game was a game of chance and did no research to prepare for the game, while Christie’s realised that the game wasn’t quite random and took advice from rock-paper-scissors tournament players.

Christie’s won the game and earned lots of money in commission from auctioning the company’s works of art, which were valued at $20 million!

I haven't played rock-paper-scissors in a long time. Maybe I'll stop using Thumb War as a method of decision making.

I have only been in a Casino once in my life. No sex and no gambling while I was there!

I have never played Rock Papr Scissors and never been in a casino.....I don't gamble except a flutter on the Grand National each year.

Spunky, it's been years. I can't even remember the last time. It's not something I ever enjoyed.

If so, what are your strategies for playing the game?
So, obviously, I don't have one.

Have you ever had sex in a casino?
Nope! I'm not much of a gambler either, so I don't go to casinos. I play some numbers once in a while- used to buy a lot of lottery tickets- but I don't even bet on pinochle when I play.

Play rock paper scissors at flamenco class to see who goes first in dancing an impromptu buleria or tangos . . . usually the loser has to go first . . . I end up being first or second . . .
