"YOU'RE A DISGRACE TO THE SCHOOL"
"YOU'RE A DISGRACE TO THE SCHOOL" In the UK, hockey refers to field hockey and not ice hockey. Ice hockey, though growing in popularity, is not a major sport in this country. Football, cricket, rugby union, rugby league and tennis are the most popular sports to watch. At school, I used to play hockey. I was captain of the school’s second team, so I wasn’t that good. After we creditably managed a draw against a top school hockey team in Wolverhampton, the headmaster announced in assembly that he wanted to see me in his office. I thought I was going to be congratulated for this fine result, but the headmaster, who was nicknamed Bengo, said I was a disgrace to the school for captaining a team that used dirty tactics to win. Being a boarding school, it was often seen as a better as to lose honourably than to win ugly. I always prefer to win ugly rather than lose with honour intact! Despite this, there are many professional ice hockey teams organised in two separate leagues. The difference between the two leagues is that the Elite Ice Hockey League, the top league, allows more imports to play for teams. Import players are generally better than British players at ice hockey. My local team, Nottingham Panthers, has just lost its best player to one of its rivals, Cardiff Devils. Guillaume Doucet - see below - scores loads of goals, and now he’s going to score loads of goals against my team! I’m not a happy bunny about this piece of business. Allegedly to promote equal opportunities, the Elite Ice Hockey League requires that one of the referees officiating in a game is always a woman. Below is my favourite stripey! What sports, if any, did you play at school? Do you prefer to win ugly or lose honourably? Were you ever a disgrace to your school? As well as hockey, I also played rugby union and basketball for my school. I also played chess for the school team, but chess isn’t quite a sport though lifting the chess pieces does require effort! |

in the U.S. field hockey is only considered a "ladies" sport...most female private schools field a team. Men's field hockey never took off here....rather football, basketball, baseball and lacrosse seems to be men's sports here. “Life is available only in the present moment.” Thich Nhat Hanh Come and read my blog! What sports, if any, did you play at school? I played Lacrosse. It is an American Indian sport. Originally the playing field was one mile in length! But we played the modern version. So the field length was similar to an American football field [image] Do you prefer to win ugly or lose honourably? The rules were a bit "loose", so it was very rough and tumble. So winning ugly was good Were you ever a disgrace to your school? I never got caught, so no

What sports, if any, did you play at school? I was on the golf team as a freshman. It may have cured me of participation in team sports forever. Do you prefer to win ugly or lose honourably? A couple of things that really hack me off are poor losers and ungracious winners. Winning is fun but I'm just not that competitive. I'd rather be a good sport than win. Were you ever a disgrace to your school? Probably more than I'll ever know. One thing stands out in your post: This guy was nicknamed Bengo, and tolerated the name, and he was calling YOU a disgrace? I played mainly football, rugby & cricket. Football being my favourite by far. We didn't win that many games! I once accidentally burned down an old school cricket pavilion! But that's another story.

I was never sports inclined when I was at school and would feign asthma attacks to be allowed to just sit and watch... I did not think I should be expected to compete against boys but on one occasion that I was forced to field in cricket I caught the top batsman out from fine leg. I prefer to lose honourably unless the winner gloats about having been victorious over me. I was THE disgrace of my school...

You sound sporty! I played rugby at school but didn't like it. I played hooker in the scrum and, apart from hooking the ball, I tried to go through games without touching the ball!

You sound very sporty! I never got involved in a fight at school, mainly because I was quite small which is why I played sneakily to win ugly! Thanks for stopping by.

What sports, if any, did you play at school? none By sixth grade I developed a bone disease, usually one that ails football players and very active athletes, particularly boys. I was a klutz and always falling down skinning my knees or breaking something. I had to see an orthopedist and received injections in my knees. He said they could do surgery, reset the bones, but no guarantees the condition wouldn't return, sucks, huh? Anyways, I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, physical pain anyway. I wasn't even allowed to participate in gym classes that year. Kneeling in church is a problem and so I don't. Do you prefer to win ugly or lose honourably? no comment Were you ever a disgrace to your school? not that they ever mentioned it to me. I am sorry that happened S.

Winning honorably is always the best, but I'll always settle for winning ugly as second best!

I never had the choice to do gymnastics although there was a vaulting horse. But looking back I think that was just an aid for the teachers to get their way with pupils!
