SNATCH SQUAD

No, I’m not referring to a slightly vulgar term for a woman’s pussy.

Above is the 1992 fire the severely damaged Windsor Castle, one of the Queen’s many homes. And below is the recent fire that ruined Clandon Park House, a stately home near Guildford. Both burnt-out premises had snatch squads at work.

Many stately homes, plus museums, art galleries etc, have a snatch list procedure in case of fire. A squad of staff is each given a list of valuable and irreplaceable items to snatch before they leave the premises when a fire breaks out.

Excluding people and pets, what would be on your snatch list if you had to quickly evacuate your home because of fire?

If there was a raging fire in my home and I had only a minute to snatch things before vacating the premises, I would snatch my wallet, my keys, my passport, my diary, my memory stick, cigarettes and a lighter, any medication, a bag and a coat.

A number of things come to mind but the smartest choice might be to grab the black powder I keep for my muzzle loaders and gently remove it from the vicinity of the fire.

The gym bag hanging in the front closet , that has a electronic copies of data ( Bank, Insurance things), paper copies of Birth Certificate and my original Passport. Wallet and keys that are on shelf near it. I exchange electronic media with copies of EVERYTHING with my Youngest sister (lives over 200 miles away) every 6 months). That way we each have our recovery stuff relatively safe and usable.

I'd snatch my large purse with wallet inside; keys, meds, passport and my laptop. I'd also try to get a change of clothes, couple of granola bars and bottle of water. Phone! Can't forget the phone!

I know people feel that antiques and other art objects are important, but I feel the only thing you need to worry about is life (people and pets). Most everything else can replaced (albeit the rare antiquities....but are they more important then life?).

I would grab everything you grab except, I don't have a diary, but I would grab my laptop!

Laptop(s), wallet (which includes ID), cash, birth certificate & social security card, and a jacket might not be a bad idea.

I once evacuated a burning building and only had time to grab the pile of clothes I'd taken off before going to sleep. I put them on on my fire escape. I was lucky, as some of my neighbors were left outside watching the building burn in their underwear. - I didn't actually lose much to the fire. I went back in the next day and retrieved what I thought of as my "valuables", only to have looters come in and steal my books and dishes.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I have important papers in a file, I would grab that. Otherwise, it is all replaceable.

It looks as if you're well organised if a fire was to happen.

I'm a lighter man with cigarettes. I find a cigarette lit with a match tastes different than one lit with a lighter.

I'd love to see my neighbours in just their underwear. Actually now I've thought more about it more, maybe not!
