WHO INVENTED THE BRA?    I’ve spent well over a year researching this post. I was once asked who invented the bra. I thought this would be a quite simple question to answer. Naively I even said that a man probably invented the bra. But after a year’s research I cannot provide any answer, never mind a definitive answer. Wallace Reyburn even wrote a spoof book, Bust-Up, in which Otto Titzling was credited as being the inventor of the bra! I don’t know who invented the bra mainly because it's very difficult if not impossible to define what a bra is. Studying the etymology of the word 'brassiere' doesn’t at all help in deciding who was the inventor of the bra. Many patents, especially in Germany and America, have been granted to bras, but they tend to be about the specifics of a bra’s design and production. Throughout history, women have long covered and supported their breasts. For example, women in Ancient Greece often wore specialised garments, called apodesmos, to support their breasts. These garments were bands of cloth wrapped across their breasts. Is any covering of breasts a bra? In 2008, archaeologists found remnants of modern-looking bras at Lengberg Castle in Tyrolean Austria; these bras have been dated back to the fifteenth century. From the sixteenth century onwards, rich women in Europe wore corsets that pushed the woman’s breast upwards. The corset became fashionable after Catherine de Médicis, the wife of King Henri II of France, enforced a ban on thick waists in the royal court. Corsets thus reigned for rich women, but poorer women in Europe often wore cheaper chest vests. Are corsets or vests bras? But, by the end of the nineteenth century, the so-called modern bra seemed to have been born. The first patent of the so-called modern bra was issued in 1889 to the German Christine Hardt, though her bra was not much more than knotted handkerchiefs. Though some bra historians give credit to the American Mary Phelps Jacob as the inventor of the first modern bra, who was awarded a patent in 1914. After finding whalebone corsets to be uncomfortable to wear, she designed a more comfortable bone-free bra. Mary Phelps Jacob set up a company, Caresse Crosby, to make and sell bras, but she soon sold her patent for $1,500 to Warner Brothers, not the film company. With metal shortages during the First World War, bras took over from corsets in terms of popularity in America and Europe; Warner Brothers made lots of money! In your opinion, what is a bra? A bra is something that I both need and hate...as soon as I get home it comes off!!! Most of the time around the house and garden I wear a vest top with a built in support. My favourite bras are pretty lacy ones and have matching knickers. Favourite against my skin tone is black, navy or purple.  ~~Anais Nin~~

In your opinion, what is a bra? I'm not at all sure that my opinion is relevant here. I don't wear one, and I don't plan to start. I have a lot of opinions, but not many of them are about bras. What are your favourite bras? I like them with breasts in them. otherwise, they do nothing for me. Does the colour of a bra make a difference? Yes. I think camo bras are positively ugly! What is a bra ? It is not meant to cover the breasts in itself, nor enhance them. It is an invention, yes, and it has to be linked with the industrial revolution. The original purpose was to lift them up, to make a woman's life more comfortable, and to avoid time finishes to drop them down not to say droop, at least delay that fate. So a bra has for major components the suspenders, which appear in your pics. Before the bra, fashion looked to let the shoulders naked with a more or less spectacular cleavage. It had to be a woman to think of if, and since it's lingerie, a french one, what else ?! Herminie Cadolle, looking for the well-being, separated the corset in two pieces, one for the waist and the other for the breasts. It was in 1889, and she sold the top alone after 1905. Vive la France ! Fuck the anglo-saxon imperialism on inventions ! I prefer a bra to open frontwise. If with a knot, I'm delighted ! Bras a different color than undies are a disgrace. Afterwards, ladies'choice, I trust them.

Does the colour of a bra make a difference? nope, but usually white or beige, surprised? It's not fair that "they" draw so much of the wrong kind of attention. Especially well, when you are still young. Oh well, it is what it is. I had two friends who were even larger than me, like G or something ridiculous. One was a minister's daughter and I don't remember her name now, but she was very popular and quite promiscuous. My friend Robin and I, we went the other way and were a couple of prudes. After I was past some of the trauma of childhood, I lost a lot of weight, by about age fourteen and blossomed. My oldest sister decided to buy me a bikini. It was fluorescent orange and fuchsia with a gold ring in the center where both sides of the top fastened. Being big wasn't bad enough, let's wrap them in hunters safety orange and hot pink! That bikini never saw water or the outside of my bedroom. You guys have no idea. Trouble with a capital T and that stands for... well you darn well know what that stands for.

A bra is designed for modesty, control and protection... Viking women wore brass hemispheres that were tied together with strips of leather and worn in a very similar way to a modern bra with a band going around the ribs but also one going over the neck to help keep it up. My favourite bras have the straps crossing the back so I don't have the straps slipping off when I'm doing stressful things like carrying groceries long distances. I like my bra to have a smooth outer fabric that looks clean under a t-shirt and it must round them up and point them in the right direction. I only ever wear black underwear, everything is mix and match and contrasts really well against my pale skin. Black bras are classic!
