I WANNA BE ELECTED

I WANNA BE ELECTED

Warning! This is a long post on politics. There's no sex here; it’s Sunday!

"I wanna be elected", so sang Alice Cooper in his 1972 hit song Elected.

On 7 May, in less than a month’s time, there will be a general election held in the UK. National elections are called general elections here! This general election is very likely to be the most significant since the 1997 general election won by Tony Blair’s Labour Party or even the 1979 general election won by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party.

It is highly probable, according to opinion polls, that no party will command a majority of seats in the House of Commons to form a majority government. This happened in the last general election when the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats agreed to form a coalition government.

Given the closeness of the election and the very high chances of another hung parliament, the problem for voters is that they only know what party they want in power but they won’t know what government they’ll get.

But, put simply, the next prime minister will either be the Conservative’s David Cameron or Labour’s Ed Miliband as these two parties will secure the most number of parliamentary seats.

Above is David Cameron after being asked to shake the hand of an unemployed poor person and explaining to people how he likes to be addressed!

And below is Ed Miliband geekily eating a bacon sandwich and telling the world what he thinks of his brother, not David Miliband but Steve MillerBand!

There will be five parties who will, one way or another, determine the nature of the government after the election - the Conservative and Unionist Party, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the UK Independence Party (Ukip).

There are other parties who will win parliamentary seats but their numbers will not be so significant in forming and sustaining a coalition government.

There is the Green Party, led by the Australian-born Natalie Bennett, but they will do well to add to the single seat they currently hold in Brighton.

In Wales, there is Plaid Cymru, which is a nationalist party but not as popular in Wales as the SNP is in Scotland.

In Northern Ireland, there is the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) and Sinn Fein. Politics in Northern Ireland are very different than the politics in the so-called mainland; politics is more centred on unionist/republican and Protestant/Catholic divisions.

If there is a hung parliament, there are six realistic scenarios for the make-up of the next government.

First, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats may continue as a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government, but this depends on the Liberal Democrats retaining sufficient parliamentary seats. Polls suggest the number of Liberal Democrat seats will fall and even crash - the party has not politically gained being in coalition with the Conservatives.

Second, the Liberal Democrats may get into bed with the Labour Party to form a Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition government. But, apart from whether the Liberal Democrats will win sufficient seats, the problem with this coalition is the leadership of the Liberal Democrats, most notably Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander, who have been in bed with the welfare-cutting Conservatives. Labour would surely demand their heads!

Also, Nick Clegg promised not to raise university tuition fees at the last election and then, on entering the coalition government, duly ditched his promise. It is possible he will lose his seat as his constituency has a significant student population.

When I lived in Portsmouth, I always voted for the Liberal Democrats to keep the Conservatives out. Never again!

Below is the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg demonstrating how he handles David Cameron’s boobs and admitting to the world that he's an honest liar!

Third, the Conservatives may try to establish a minority government, especially if other parties refuse to work with them. The left-wing SNP has already ruled out a coalition with the right-wing Conservatives. Also, though the Conservatives officially belong to the Conservative and Unionist Party, they are effectively an English party with little support elsewhere in the country.

Fourth, Labour may attempt to form a minority government. Labour did this in the mid-1970s for a short period of time but its minority government soon fell. Minority governments, by their very nature, are inherently unstable as they cannot secure a majority of votes and are reliant on other parties on a vote-by-vote basis to get their legislation passed.

Fifth, Labour may form a de facto coalition government with the SNP. The two parties, despite being bitter rivals in Scotland, are politically close except on two critical issues - nuclear weapons and Scottish independence. Though the Labour leader Ed Miliband has ruled out a formal coalition with the SNP, it’s possible that an informal understanding between the two parties may be struck.

Below is the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon demonstrating what size cock and how many cocks she likes to have!

Sixth, the Conservatives may enter into coalition, either formally or informally, with Ukip led by Nigel Farage. Though David Cameron described Ukip members as "fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists", most Ukip voters were Conservative voters! If the Conservatives offered a few concessions to Ukip on Europe and immigration, I’m sure Nigel Farage will jump into bed with David Cameron to savour power.

Boris Johnson recently quipped, "If you vote Tory, you get broadband. If you vote Ukip, you get Miliband." But I think if you vote Ukip, you may get a Cammerbund! I’m not as funny as Boris Johnson!

Ukip are an anti-foreigner party. They don’t like the European Union and they don’t like immigrants. Below is the Ukip leader Nigel Farage being sucked off by a migrant fruit picker and surviving a crash in a foreign-built plane!

Turnout at general elections is gradually declining in this country and, as in many countries, there seems to be increasing voter disillusionment with politicians. Following the American satirist P J O’Rourke, "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

Many people criticise politicians for being in it for themselves and criticise parties for being the same. I don’t share this disillusionment, the vote was hard-won and it is a way to kick the bastards out! As Winston Churchill observed, "Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others."

The Conservatives and Labour have similar views on managing capitalism, cutting the deficit, maintaining good relations with America (and China), keeping nuclear weapons and protecting education and health spending. But the two main parties also have differences.

The Conservatives want to make deeper and faster cuts than Labour; the Conservatives are ambivalent about Europe whereas Labour are committed to the European Union; unlike the Conservatives, Labour want to remove the tax privileges of so-called non-doms, the many rich foreigners living in Britain; and, again unlike the Conservatives, Labour want to get rid of insecure zero-hours contracts for most workers.

Are you disillusioned with politics?
What will the next government of the UK look like?
If you have a vote or had a vote in the UK, which party would you vote for?

I’m going to vote Labour because I don’t believe wealth trickles down from the rich to the poor without state intervention and I’m pro-foreigner!

For what it’s worth, my prediction after next month’s election is that there’ll be either a Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition government or a Labour minority government propped up by the SNP.

The most interesting thing about this general election is not the election campaign itself but what will happen afterwards in terms of party deals and leadership culls! Well, I find it interesting because I’m a political junkie!

Are you disillusioned with politics? Not so much with politics, but with politicians and the apathy if the voting public. The voters just do not seem to do any research, nor remember what pissed them off about politicians. Personally I never shake hands with politicians, so far they are lower than whale s**t in my mind. And I do remember at election time

What will the next government of the UK look like? To be honest, from what little I know (and that is admittedly very little), it probably will look no different than it has been

If you have a vote or had a vote in the UK, which party would you vote for? I can not say for sure. I would have to do a lot of research before I decided

I'm disillusioned about the stupidity of the common voter.

Single WORST thing America ever did to itself as a nation was to outlaw voter literacy testing. Yes, it was being abused in the Jim Crow south to disenfranchise the black vote, but the proper solution would have been to punish those involved and institute national standards.

But no... we did the exact opposite and the worst conceivable thing. we let the malefactors walk and outlawed the tests. Now, even the most ignorant retarded idiots can have a say in who gets elected and politician pander to that very ignorance.

Ever since that time, our politics have become more and more toxic and our politicians more and more corrupt.

We is doomed.

Since I left the UK....I find it very hard to follow your politics so I find it hard to comment.

What I do know is that being a part of the EU has been good for Ireland and that the huge cuts everyone took here has resulted in us climbing out of the recession. I wouldn't like to see the UK leave the EU.

If I still lived there I would probably vote Labour. I think you may find Sinn Fein losing a seat or two. A lot of dirt has been coming to light in the recent past.

Are you disillusioned with politics?
Of course! It's MEANT to ruin our attitudes and make us apathetic! I'm a recovering political junky- I have to take a periodic powder and run away from it or it would make me very sad. Fortunately I'm a Green Mascohistic Socialist Democrat so a certain amount of sadness is quite satisfactory.

What will the next government of the UK look like?
Silly.

If you have a vote or had a vote in the UK, which party would you vote for?

Wow. I thought our politics were confusing.

I've been lamenting lately about how our two party system sucks. More parties do seem to add to the mess, but it may have more wheeling and dealing too.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

1. Yes, totally and utterly. Ever since Tony Blair got into bed with Dubbya.........
2. No idea, other than that it will be full of two-faced double dealing pollies!
3. I'll probably end up voting for Labour, again............but only because the choice is so limited. Otherwise, there' not much between Labour and the Tories these days.

Apathy, disenfranchisement, disinterest from the voting public, these are all things which in my view are encouraged by the establishment. It all helps to keep the established pollies and civil servants in work. I think I've said before that pollies should be restricted to two terms in office, that they should be paid well, a flat rate, with reasonable expenses (not first class travel etc). Too many of them start off with good intentions only to have them corrupted.

Aye, I'm completely disenchanted with politics in this country. We're effectively ruled by the right wing media. And: Bah!

I don't know, perhaps, but I will still vote, always do.

What will the next government of the UK look like? I have no idea. Thanks for your efforts and the thorough explanation.

If you have a vote or had a vote in the UK, which party would you vote for? Same as you for the same reasons. The problem with trickle down is the pockets of the rich. It is only allowed to trickle down after their pockets are full and overflowing, but their pockets are so damned deep there will never be the promised trickle down. The only thing that ever trickles down is brown not green.
I always vote too. I've voted for most parties except the right-wing ones!

I hope hypothetical outcome #5 is what happens... A Labour minority government with solidarity from the SNP. That seems to be the best outcome but all governments are a product of the combined characteristics and qualities of its candidates.

In spite of the last 8 and a half odd years of politics in australia, I'm more passionate about politics than disillusioned. Apathy will lead to the nomination of arseholes by arseholes, so unless we want the sort of garbage government we have had over the last 18 months, we have to start really knowing the issues and studying the core values of each party and candidate and not be disillusioned.

I can't predict what the next government of the UK will look like but I hope the majority vote matches yours. You know that we are on the very same page in our political affiliations, dear S... I would vote the same way as I do here; Labor.

In australia, however, I'm beginning to drift towards The Greens but still fairly solidly Labor for now.
The polls have hardly moved since I posted this. It's going to be close. The Tories are now offering bribes to increase their vote (eg cheap shares in a nationalised bank, increased NHS spending, right to buy social housing) - this shows they're worried (hopefully)!
