THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF BLOGGING
THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF BLOGGING I’ve been off work the last couple of days as I went down with a viral infection. I’m now back on the mend and raring to get back to work … tomorrow! While off work sick, I’ve been bored so I decided to do a bit of demographic analysis of blogland or, rather, my blogland. My demographic analysis used the labels adopted by this site, ie male, female, couple and transsexual/transvestite/transgender (TS/TV/TG). I know these are flawed categories, especially the T category. The site seems to mix gender, sexuality and relationship status in quite a problematic way. I assumed that the details (eg gender, relationship status, country of residence, etc) provided by members was true! I’m aware that members who are not watchers may follow my blog and I may regularly read blogs of those I don’t watch. Also, I’m aware that some watchers haven’t visited my blog for a very long time and some bloggers I watch haven’t blogged for a long time. Anyway, here’s what I found about the demographics of my blogland. 152 members watch my blog - I even lost one watcher as I was doing my demographic analysis! However, for some reason, I can only trace 92 of these bloggers! Is it that the site exaggerates the number of watchers to encourage bloggers? Of those who watch my blog, 58% are men, 24% are women, 15% are couples and 3% are TS/TV/TG members. 59% are Americans, 15% are British, 7% are Canadians, 3% are Australians, 3% are Germans, 2% are Irish and 2% are Swedes, plus 8 members (9% ) from Argentina, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore. I follow 60 bloggers, though not all closely - 47% are female bloggers, 37% are male bloggers, 13% are couple bloggers and 3% are TS/TV/TG bloggers. 48% of these bloggers I follow also watch my blog. Below is a summary of the findings of my demographic analysis according to the seven presumptions I made before the analysis: 1. I would watch more blogs written by men than women (because there are far more men than women on this site) FALSE 2. More bloggers than non-bloggers would watch my blog (because bloggers often support each other) FALSE 3. I would watch proportionately more blogs written by female than male bloggers (because females are said to be better at expressing feelings, etc) FALSE 4. Proportionately more UK members would watch my blog than bloggers from other countries (because I’m British) PROBABLY TRUE 5. I would follow more American bloggers and more American members would follow my blog (because there are far more Americans on this site) TRUE 6. More men than women would watch my blog (because there are far more men on this site) TRUE 7. I would follow proportionately more Canadian bloggers and more Canadian members would follow my blog (because it’s well known that Canadians are perverts!) TRUE!!! From all this, I’m most surprised at the number of male bloggers I follow and at the number of bloggers I follow who don’t follow me. I’m not at all surprised by the Canadians! If a blogger, what do you think are the demographics of your blogging world? Do you keep tabs on who watches your blog? Do you tend to follow bloggers who follow you? I’ve just spent a few hours finding this shit out! Yes, you’re quite right; I’ve had far too much time on my hands lately! But I want to thank everyone who follows, comments on and reads my blog. Thank you! |

If a blogger, what do you think are the demographics of your blogging world? I am not sure what it is. But when I have too much time on my hands, it will be worth checking out Do you keep tabs on who watches your blog? I don't, is there a way to do it? Do you tend to follow bloggers who follow you? I try to with the ones that post to me, after all, they are making an effort, so I should also

I don't really track my watchers, a quick look shows mainly female, mainly non-UK. But I inhabit a quiet backwater of the blogs and I'm probably not representative. Most of the people who visit my blog are watchers. I noticed that about 5 or 6 people stopped watching when I did my post on the violent "Extreme Porn" adverts. I don't know who they were or why they left but the number of watchers went down. Again, I'm not representative as a blogger - I only watch a dozen bloggers, none of whom blog regularly. Some haven't posted in ages, and I watch them because if they do choose to blog then I don't want to miss it. I don't watch UK blogs because it's easy to keep up with them via "Browse by location".

I watch 31 bloggers...a couple that haven't been around for quite some time, but I won't give up on them yet! 25 females.......5 males(including you).....1 couple The site says I have 62 watchers but I only count 41 "eye balls"! 32 females.....7 males.....2 couples... I think the site has inflated the count to make me feel good! I do comment on some blogs that I come across in the trending list or in the group "NHW Bloggers" that I don't watch on a regular basis!

I have 281 watchers and when the number was far fewer I tried to keep track of them....I couldn't now. I watch over 100 bloggers but of those maybe only 10 post daily...another 10 every couple of days or weekly and the rest very rarely or not at all now. I watch the bloggers I like to read....I don't always comment.....and whether they watch me or not is immaterial. If someone is a new watcher to my blog I will have a look at their blog but if I find the content uncomfortable or difficult to read I won't go back. ~~Anais Nin~~

To be your only french watcher kind of puzzles me. Yet it proves how much francophonic Blogland has been burnt after a terrible and general blogwar which made flee so many blogmasters - including me - commentators or mere readers. Most of my todays reader stay mute and won't come through the body of my blog, I'm just unable to try and make demography upon it. I'm just sure they're reading french and are eager after my posts, always leaving the thread of publications with more views than anyone, including women ... my main hope is it won't last, that frenchspeaking Blogland will bloom again this spring, but it's a faithful wish and I have a huge doubt. It was a very nice surprise to hit your well tended blog ... I intend to pimp it some day and will use sometimes your neat three-questions-trick which is very cunning. Thanks for making A2F world !Blogland a rich and thoughtful place, S.

Dear S, it has always been an immense pleasure and privilege of mine to watch and take part on your blog. Thank you for such a beautifully structured and yet stimulating blog that is also an incredible amount of fun. I know I have a majority American viewership and participation group on my blog. The majority are male. Approximately 1 visitor in 80 leaves a comment as a post by post average. The primary age demographic is the 45 - 65 year age group. I mostly watch male blogs, I'm fascinated by men, they're strange. There are, I think 34 Americans who watch my blog, 11 Canadians, 5 British Isles, 5 in Asia, 1 in Bulgaria, 1 in Germany, 1 in Poland, 2 in Scandinavia, 3 in australia, 2 from Spain, 2 from Italy and 3 in Middle Eastern countries. I try to keep a fairly close eye on who watches my blog but sometimes other stuff in life gets in the way and a few come and go. I generally follow other bloggers who follow me but even those who watch me, if I don't watch them, I try to drop by when a post they have done sparks my interest. I don't get bent out of shape if I watch another blogger and they don't watch me... Some people that I watch, watch upwards of 60 blogs and keeping up would be exhausting, especially since most of them have jobs and family life to focus their energies on, too.

If a blogger, what do you think are the demographics of your blogging world? Don't know, don't care, maybe when I am down and out with the flu I may wonder about it then. Do you keep tabs on who watches your blog? Well I do take a peek. Do you tend to follow bloggers who follow you? I try, but it is nearly impossible. I am attempting to follow 35, but you know I almost always stop here first. I am glad you are feeling better now. I spent hours on those squirrels, I think your time spent on this endeavour may have been more productive. However, the squirrels were funny and made people laugh. I always like making and hearing people laugh, don't you? I didn't laugh when reading your blog today. Try harder, will you? Oh no, I don't mean that, sometimes you are quite amusing. You are always very informative though. I will try harder to make you laugh. I'm sure you'll let me know when I fail dismally!

Given your and my analysis of blogging demographics, New Zealand doesn't figure highly. Clearly they aren't as perverted as Canadians! I'd never block you!

If a blogger, what do you think are the demographics of your blogging world? It's cool! I can blog with people from all over the world! Do you keep tabs on who watches your blog? I wish I had time to do that! Do you tend to follow bloggers who follow you? If someone leaves a comment on my blog I try, but don't always manage, to return the favor!
