THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A BAD BIRD

In the UK, on 7 May the election results will be announced, not the General Election where another coalition government or a minority government seems likely but the winner of the election to vote for a national bird for Britain.

Britain does not have a national bird, like America’s bald eagle. Mr Lindo, supported by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, has organised poll to vote for Britain’s national bird. I’m surprised McLindo - aka lindoboy100 - hasn’t advertised this poll on his blog!

The online poll’s shortlists ten birds to vote for - the barn owl, blackbird, blue tit, hen harrier, kingfisher, mute swan, puffin, red kite, robin, and wren.

I’m shocked the pigeon didn’t make the shortlist! My vote would be cast for the blackbird, the puffin or the wren - see above - though the robin is the favourite to become Britain’s national bird.

Despite my intense lobbying, my favourite native bird didn’t make the shortlist - see below. I’m fascinated with the Manx shearwater. This seabird breeds in the north Atlantic, mainly in Britain, Ireland and Iceland, but from July to March the bird migrates to the south Atlantic, mainly to Argentina and Brazil.

Manx shearwater birds have a long life; the oldest recorded bird lived to over 50 years old.

At sea, they are very agile and silent; but on land in their burrows, they are very ungainly and noisy. Because of their poor mobility on land, Manx shearwaters are vulnerable to attack by large gulls and they are prey to peregrine falcons, eagles, rats, cats and even humans.

What is your favourite native bird?
If any, what is your favourite bird to eat?

I love eating pheasant and turkey but I’ve gone well off chicken.

PS. There are more members of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds than there are members of political parties in Britain. It seems British people prefer birds more than politics!

I can't blame people for preferring birds to politicians....it's a no brainer really!

I would vote for the robin....I have one that visits my garden every day.

I like turkey to eat...not too fond of richer birds.

1. Och, I.m not sure I could pick a favourite. We have such a wide variety in these isles. A few of my fav's would be golden eagle, sea eagle, sparrow hawk, kestrel, ganet, plover, puffin, curlew, grebes, chaffinches, tits, the humble sparrow, wrens, robin, owls, kingfishers, blackies, I even love gulls and crows. I'm not a twitcher at all, I just enjoy birds. Oh aye, I love lapwings at this time of year, and flocking starling in the autumn.

2. I enjoy eating all birds, especially the gamier ones. For me, chicken has tobbe properly reared for the best flavour.

And who is this impostor??

I recently subscribed to the BBC page and saw a story about this.

I love birds! My cat loves them too. lol

My local favorite has to be the rare cardinal. Closely followed by robins. Purple Martins are pretty cool too and fly in amazing formations, but they are only here for a short time. Nebraska hosts many migratory birds.

Of course I also love Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls.

As much as I love birds, I would never want one as a pet.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I think the Robin will win, though their may be a Scottish and Welsh lobby for the golden eagle and red kite, which are seen as the unofficial national birds of these two countries.

I'd like to see the puffin win the vote. They are so fascinating to look at.

My favourite national bird would have to be the australian Kookaburra

My favourite bird to eat would be turkey
Puffins are enchanting to watch. I voted for the blackbird in the end.

We have lots of Brent geese, similar to Canada geese, where I work and they too make a big mess!

What is your favourite native bird? That's too hard, Cardinals, goldfinches, chickadees. We have an owl in our yard and so many turkeys. In Virginia Black Vultures would congregate in the hundreds at Dutch Gap near the power station. It was eerie seeing them on the power lines and in the trees. They have euthanized about 400 of them trying to reduce the population. A favorite is any bird but those aggressive seagulls.

If any, what is your favourite bird to eat? Not keen on turkey, never ate anything but chicken or turkey. Going back to vegetarian sooner rather than later.

What about a magpie? If you see one make sure you greet him and enquire about his wife!
I'm very surprised the magpie didn't make the shortlist. Magpies are magical and quite comical bird, though they are surrounded with folklore.

I've never quite understood why it's called the bald eagle as the bird doesn't look too bald!

    Back yard sparrows.

    Chicken, I guess!
When I was a kid, sparrows were everywhere, now they're in serious decline here.

We don't have cardinals here, but we do have eagles, falcons, hawks and owls.
Here's a peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the world!
