A STAKEOUT

A STAKEOUT

I regularly go walking in a wood. On my last few walks, I’ve often seen a green woodpecker and a young weasel - see above. A few times, I have seen the woodpecker and the weasel play with each other, and once I saw the weasel on the back of the woodpecker while flying. Until now, I’ve kept this secret.

Normally I don’t take a camera with me when I go walking in the woods, but after seeing the flying weasel I decided to take a camera with me on the walk last Sunday.

I realised a photo of a flying weasel would not be an easy photo to take so I decided to purchase a hide, a shelter used by bird watchers.

On Sunday afternoon, I set up my position in the woods; both I and my bird hide were camouflaged. In preparation for a long stakeout, I had bought plenty of supplies, including army-style food rations, bottles of water, a pair of binoculars, a torch and a sleeping bag.

After several hours in my hide, I didn’t get one sight of the woodpecker or the weasel never mind a sight of them playing together. It was in the middle of the night, when I spotted the two friends through my binoculars. I quickly grabbed my camera and took a photo of the flying weasel. Below is the photo I took.

Realising that the photo I had taken would perhaps be of interest to the media, I approached several newspapers to see if they wanted to publish the photo (for a fee of course!).

But all the newspapers I approached declined my offer. The newspapers told me that my night-time photograph was at best an outtake and that they had already been offered a photo of a flying weasel taken in the day.

It turned out that my so-called friend and fellow twitcher Martin Le-May had been hacking my phone and realised what I was up to last weekend. He just turned up on Monday afternoon, while on a leisurely stroll in the woods, and took the photograph.

Martin Le May has now taken all the plaudits while my stakeout efforts are now consigned to a footnote in history. Life’s not fair!

Have you ever done a stakeout?
What has been the best and the most difficult photo that you’ve taken?

PS. For animal lovers, I can assure you that the little weasel survived his flight … and the woodpecker lived to tell the tale!

Fascinating though, what a wonderful photo and moment.

1. Nope.
2. Can't think of one, I'm not really a photographer. Ask McDoe!

no...no need so far.

What has been the best and the most difficult photo that you’ve taken?
LOL....nothing serious, but sometimes taking HNW photos can be the best and the most difficult to take!

A “green woodpecker and a young weasel” is there some hidden naughty meaning here?

Have you ever done a stakeout? - I've taken of few shots of birds-of-prey in flight, but it was at a park dedicated to exactly that, so not a stakeout exactly.

What has been the best and the most difficult photo that you’ve taken? - See above. Despite the circumstances, getting a good shot was still a challenge.

Happy HNW.

No never done a stake-out....I wouldn't have the patience.

I'm not good with a camera at all so every photo I have ever taken has been difficult. I'm lucky if I even remember to switch the camera on!!

Have you ever done a stakeout?
Can casing a joint be considered a stakeout?

What has been the best and the most difficult photo that you’ve taken?
Not that I have taken, but that was taken of me, and it was a mugshot. They wouldn't let me fix my hair.

The closest I've come to a stakeout was hiding under a quilt on the floor waiting for my husband to walk by. Scared the crap out of him!

The most difficult pictures I take are my HNW pics. Always a challenge making myself look sexy.

He was one lucky photographer to capture that shot of a weasel piggy-backing on a very alarmed woodpecker.

Dearest S... Last time I heard, you didn't own a camera and that was your reason for not uploading any more recent pics of you. I have an incredibly long memory.

I have done a stakeout but cannot talk about it here.

The best and most difficult photo I have ever taken are two separate photos... The best could very possibly be my Jacaranda from my bedroom balcony that I included on one of your posts, last year and the most difficult would have to be each and every one that I have uploaded to my profile this year.
You're quite right, I don't own a camera. My imagination was running wild again!

I can imagine stakeouts are very boring.
And I can imagine how difficult it is to take a photo of a bouncing FWB!

Have you ever done a stakeout? You mean like stalking, no, I never do that sort of thing ever, I promise, you have my word on it.

What has been the best and the most difficult photo that you've taken? I am a lousy photographer. I think my Father was the one to take photos, my mother never would have bothered. I don't think I ever remember her taking a photo and she hated being photographed. I got that from her, not wishing to be photographed. You can see I am not good with a camera, my profile pic is all blurry. I have tried to take a picture of my eye for a blog post, but its not so hot either.

I tried to get a photo of the high waves in Wales and every shot is blurry and I missed the shot everytime. I had to resort to video.
I guess a stakeout is stalking. I can't imagine you as a stalker!
I'm useless at taking photos as well!

I think a good story can be written about a green woodpecker and a young weasel, a story full of double entendres!
