NUDGE, NUDGE

“Nudge, nudge” is a so-called classic Monty Python line. I’ve never got into Monty Python and now I realise why - they produced a lot of shit to produce one gem!

Nudge theory is a theory where economics meets psychology. Its main argument is that that people’s behaviour is influenced by incentives and disincentives. Nudge theory is influencing government policy in Western counties, particularly in Australia, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.

Nudge theorists argue that it’s much better to give people incentives and disincentives to change their behaviour rather than change the law to outlaw their behaviour. People being nudged still make choice; people being outlawed have no choice!

So you tax cigarettes to provide disincentives to stop people smoking (even though this means less tax revenues) and you give shopping vouchers to mothers who breast-feed their babies (even though this means paying people for what they would have otherwise done).

In their very readable book Freakanomics, Levitt and Dubner claim that falling crime rates in the West have been reduced because abortion has been legalised. Their argument is that by creating incentives for pregnant women living in crime-ridden areas to have an abortion creates a less crime-ridden society twenty years later.

In the Netherlands, they have found that a man’s aim when peeing in an urinal is truer if there is a fly for the man to aim at than if there was no fly in the urinal.

What makes you change your behaviour?
Does a nudge work for you to change your behaviour?
Has the law ever changed your behaviour?

What makes me change my behaviour....not a lot actually.

A nudge from someone I cared about would be likely to work....and increasing the price of cigarettes certainly worked lol!!

Well I guess the law about no smoking areas changed it and probably laws and campaigns relating to drunk driving made me determined not to drink and drive ever.

The tax situation is hypocritical! They collect millions and spend millions to convince one to quit! There is very little that can change my mind...and the law never has!

I'm a Python fan!

What makes you change your behaviour?
Have you read Kafka's "The Penal Colony"? That would do it.

Does a nudge work for you to change your behaviour?
Yeah, if it's the right nudge, or the right nudger.

Has the law ever changed your behaviour?
They only caught me a couple of times...I pretty much got away with all that other shit. So...no. It's a game, and I won.

Does a nudge work for you to change your behaviour? Not often

Has the law ever changed your behaviour? Almost every day of the week, we are a State with laws to issue laws

I bet you only detracted the weirdos who may have done a little crap
amongst a lot of chef d'oeuvres only to make us protest., wink, wink.

A lot of things change my behavior which mainly depends on who I'm with.

As a Frenchie, we are a lot more lighter with nudges. We use our thumb instead of the elbow.
Many a coup-de-pouce have changed and change my ways, mostly people do that.
I'm normally grateful for it, even if sometimes it was closer to a hit with the knee in my balls.

Wish laws could only match with some of my behaviors, that would be nice.

What makes you change your behavior?
If I want to change then I will change....no one can make me change!

Does a nudge work for you to change your behavior?
Yes, part of positive reinforcement and punishment from behavioral theory!

Has the law ever changed your behavior?
Yes, if there is a punisher assigned with them....ie. fines and jail time!

Because I do taxes for a living, I watch for areas that could ding people in the coming years. The incentives Obama put into place to kick start the economy; Cars for Clunkers, Home buyer programs and the like. It was a front loaded scam. In fine print, which most ignored, was the rub. You would have to pay back the incentive in the coming years on your taxes. (People like to believe they got money for nothing) I warned many about this but a few did not listen. A psychologist friend of mine bought his first house during this time. He came to me a few years later with his taxes in complete dismay at the amount he needed to pay back.
Though the policy was clearly defined to those who took the time, sheeples tend to hear only what they want to forward their own agendas.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

On the smoking front, I don't like looking at the photos of diseased organs that are often displayed on cigarette packets but they still haven't yet made me stop smoking!

A study in the Czech Republic found that smokers pay far more in tax than they get out of tax-funded services.

I never change my behaviour unless I want to.

Nudges tend to make me defiant and resentful. Hmmm!

The law has never changed my behaviour, even where I disagree with a law, I'm inclined to comply.
It's those subtle nudges you have to watch out for. My Mum was very effective at nudging me to change my behaviour without me realising it!

Freakanomics was published in 2005; it's a counter-intuitive book written by economists. It's not often economists write a popular book in language most people understand!

A thumb nudge sounds much better than an elbow nudge. People do change our ways despite our protestations that we are free individuals!

It's interesting looking at people changing their behaviour and whether it's caused by positive or negative reinforcements. I'm more of a positive reinforcement person to get me to change the way I behave.

Nudge theory came about to change people's behaviour. Nudge theorists believe that people are more likely to change their behaviour if nudged rather than if their behaviour was banned.

Did she use reverse psychology or an even more subtle method? It takes a very emotionally engaged parent to be skilful at managing the behaviour of their offspring... Even if she was very chintzy, lol
My Mum would use a look and then give me a bit of time to voluntarily change my behaviour!
