REVOLUTIONARY TIMES
REVOLUTIONARY TIMES There’s no sex in this post unless you suffer from a severe version of the Swedish Condition! There's a prize for anyone who can see cock in this post. A recent Oxfam report, Even It Up, found that the wealth of the richest 80 individuals is the same as the wealth owned by the poorest 3.5 billion of people in the world. In 2014, the richest one per cent of people in the world owned 48 per cent of global wealth. Oxfam predicts that the richest one per cent will own more than the poorest half of the world’s population by next year. Since 2009, a year-or-so after the global financial crisis, the wealth of the richest 80 people in the world has doubled, whereas the wealth of the bottom 50 per cent is lower in 2014 than in 2009. These figures are just staggering, obscenely staggering. Capitalism! To me, these are revolutionary times! Pro-capitalists always argue that though the very rich may get richer, but the poor also get richer. Anti-capitalists always argue that the very rich get richer because the poor get relatively poorer. Are you pro- or anti-capitalist? Would you like to live amidst a revolutionary? I’m okay with capitalism provided governments manage it better. Inequality, along with climate change and corruption, is a key threat to society. Research has found that people are happier in less unequal societies. I’d like a revolution, though I realise I may be killed by either side for not being rich or poor enough! These are the dangers of being middle class! Let’s sharpen the guillotines; only 80 people need to be executed! |

Are you pro- or anti-capitalist? Definitely pro capitalism. I would never support redistribution of wealth. Why should a successful person have taken away from them, what they have worked for or created? (I am not of course referring to despots, dictators etc) I am certainly not in the category of those "80', but if someone tried to take mine and redistribute it, it would be a very short "revolution" Would you like to live amidst a revolutionary? Not me

Are you pro- or anti-capitalist? I'm a Marxist. But I'm flexible. Marxism is a philosophy, a way of viewing events both current and historical and is not properly rigid and doctrinaire. So it doesn't necessarily make me ant-capitalist...and yet, these days, with all the excesses of laissez capitalism as practiced in America I am VERY anti-capitalist. Would you like to live amidst a revolutionary? No. But, you gotta do what needs to be done. Strike! Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I am a pro Capitalist with limits....I'm not into people becoming rich by theft but I do believe that those who work hard, provide jobs for others should be rewarded....it would be nice though if they gave some (and yes I know some do) of their wealth to the very poor. I don't think I'd like to live through a revolution....if there is one I'd need to practise my knitting again!!! ~~Anais Nin~~

Such as Apple exploiting Chinese workers? Check out what Marx has to say on where profit comes from in a capitalist society. Profit just shows that you haven't been paying your workers enough... Marx also provided the solution - workers of the world unite! The only reason it doesn't happen is because capitalism preys on individual greed (and insecurity) at the expense of collective good. Why should I care what Chinese workers are paid if it means I can get a cheaper iPhone? For most people individual greed is a more powerful driver than concern for your fellow man...

" I’m okay with capitalism provided governments manage it better.", sorry TC but I have to Who do you think is managing the government; the 1% or the rest? Therein lies the problem! People have delusions about a "level field", or my personal favorite, "pulling themselves up by their boot straps". The field has never been level... some start life running downhill, others are running up Everest with no boot, thus no bootstraps. Only one way it will play out over time. Find pleasure in giving pleasure

1. Not capitalist. I'm not averse to profit rewarding hard work. I am averse to profit at all costs, and against fucking people over because you can, just to make money. 2. Yes, probably, depending on the cause. I find the gathering of wealth by the top end of society quite sinister, the disregard for your fellow man in pursuit of more of everything that you don't need is evil. I'm by no means religious, but are these times not predicted in ancient scriptures?

Most "rich" are self made, not inherited. So they came from "poor" or middle class and worked up. What is to stop other's from doing the same?

It's been told: "For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away." And so it's always been... Waiting for a trickle down, but I am afraid when it comes it will not be green... Stuck in the middle with you /Stealers Wheel Perhaps we should "Make love not war", no one ever died from love.

I'm anti-capitalist... I have seen the capitalist trend growing and capitalistic greed getting out of control. In my country at the moment, we are run by a political party that is a slave to the mistaken ideal of filter-down economics (which has been increasingly proven not to work) and they give billion dollar tax cuts to mega billionaire miners and large conglomerates and yet want to discontinue paying any benefits to the unemployed that these rich companies are refusing to create job vacancies for and cutting pensions and trying to dramatically cut the minimum wage without fixing our taxation system and whivnging about the "budget black hole" created by the previous government. The previous government had the ignominious task of generating cash flow in our economy during the global financial crisis (a fact conveniently ignored by the current government) as well as a few major environmental disasters where the previous government had the moral duty to give financial assistance to help people rebuild their lives while the people were waiting to get their insurance payout and for a lot of people who had no insurance. That's what got the country into debt, not the previous government being wasteful. The current government will never post a budget surplus without starving half the population and they tried that with the budget they tabled last year that couldn't pass the senate because it was morally bankrupt and the entire party threw their full support behind it. I don't know whether I would like to live amidst a revolution but I think one in my country is inevitable if they don't repair the tax system. Lower wage earners are being over-taxed and living below the poverty line and the extremely wealthy are not paying a fair and reasonable level of tax. Our dipshit government scrapped 2 multi-billion dollar taxes (carbon and mining profits tax) but have not come by a new revenue stream. Our treasurer and finance minister are economic illiterates.

The world economy can only grow through osmosis... More money at the bottom will float to the top than the other way around. Top world economist Joseph Stiglitz is right! Economists, or at least academic economists, are more concerned about modelling than understanding the economy. You almost need a maths degree to study economics nowadays.

Would you believe it was a nighthood? I thought only a royal could award those... Apparently Tony Abbott thinks he's the Queen! Who knew? According to Abbott, it was for Prince Phillip's patronage to a number of australia's charities... Mostly notably, the Tony Abbott self-aggrandaisement fund.

I tend not to make a big distinction between a system (capitalism) and people operating the system (capitalists) as I think most people would behave the same in the system. If people significantly abuse the system (eg profiteering), then there's something wrong with the system. I will check the work of Hernando de Soto. thanks for the homework!

...these are trying times......the wealthy need to open their eye and wallets to realize that their wealth is a responsibility or they are going to be called on it.........Bill Gates was nailed on this a few years ago for not giving a dime to charity...but he saw the light and spread the word...... ....we are all responsible for each other..... Blue.................... sorry Spunk ...I have been gone awhile
