"CLARKE ... ONE-NIL"

I hear there’s some fuss about balls in the run-up to this weekend’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. But this blog is about real football (soccer to my American friends).

“Clarke … one nil” was the classic line used by the football commentator David Coleman as Mick Jones crossed the ball for Allan Clarke to head the winning goal for Leeds United in the 1972 FA Cup Final.

From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, Leeds United, managed by Don Revie and captained by Billy Bremner, were the best football team in England.

Arguably, this Leeds United team is the best club team ever assembled in the world, though fans of AC Milan, Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid may want to argue otherwise.

Leeds United are my football team. I’ve supported them for nearly 50 years now. I started supporting them since the mid-1960s. One of my boarding school teachers took me to my first Leeds United game against Nottingham Forest. At the time I didn’t realise this was part of his grooming process!

With football teams, one can either reasonably determine how old someone is or where someone was brought up. Football fans tend to support either a top team or a local team.

My Grandad regularly took me to Stoke City games. Stoke was only 20 miles from I was brought up but, rather than supporting my local team, I went for glory and supported Leeds United.

Supporting a football team, or any sports team, is all about emotion. It’s the hope of triumph followed by the despair of defeat. Only one team can ever win a game, win a league or win a cup.

Leeds United are not doing very well this season or, for that matter, the last seven seasons. The current owner of Leeds United, the Italian Massimo Cellino, was recently deemed unfit to own a football club because of his past convictions, but he’s still running the club. He’s now on his third manager since he took over six months ago!

But, because of my emotional attachment, I cannot switch allegiance to a more successful football team.

Here are 11 ‘facts’ about Leeds United:
1. Leeds United play in a white strip because Don Revie wanted them to play in the same strip as the then mighty Real Madrid
2. Don Revie left Leeds United to manage England and later died of motor neurone disease
3. Leeds United should have won the 1974 European Cup (now known as the Champions League) if the referee hadn’t disallowed a perfectly good goal against Bayern Munich
4. Fans of Leeds United (not me) have a deserved reputation for football hooliganism
5. Leeds United were one of the first top football clubs to sign and play African footballers, including the South African Albert Johanneson in the 1960s and Lucas Radebe in the 1990s (who Nelson Mandela described as “my hero”) and the Ghanaian Tony Yeboah (who can forget his stunning goals)
6. Brian Clough managed Leeds United for 44 days; The Damned United is a brilliant book and film about his time at the club
7. Leeds United are the only football club to have released a greatest hits album
8. Allan Clarke was nicknamed Sniffer
9. In 1972 Leeds United, in beating Southampton 7-0, kept possession for 39 consecutive passes, the forerunner to Barcelona’s and Spain’s tiki-taka football
10. Leeds United have a history of financial problems and going bust
11. Alan Smith (see below) was one of my favourite players for Leeds United; I named my cat after him - he now plays for Notts County, the oldest professional football club in the world

As well as Leeds United, I also follow the GMB Nottingham Panthers, my local ice hockey team. They are doing quite well this season … so far!

What sports do you like playing or watching?
Baseball is the superior game- better than any kind of football, whether American, Canadian or futbol.

What sports teams do you follow?
I'm a Chicago White Sox fan, just like Barack Obama, but I've been a fan longer than he has.

And finally if you follow a sports team, how are your teams doing?
They finished next to last in their division. But losing baseball is still better than winning football.

I have played both versions of Football, Baseball, Basketball, Rugby and Wrestling at various stages of my life. Now it's pretty much golf and pickup basketball against my oldest son.

Baseball it about all I watch... with 162 games, you are going to catch a few.

I've supported 'City' since 1979. Yes, Leeds were an awesome side back in the day that's for sure.

I've seen clips of NASCAR racing but it's not shown here on a regular basis.

    got nothing for you.

But you've got a lot of balls trying to poke the sleeping giant-- "real football?" You do like to get your licks in.
If the sleeping giant is American Football, then consider it poked.

One of the things I've learnt since blogging here is the need for transAtlantic language! But it's football to me and I know it's football to you, my good Canadian friend!

I've been to one baseball game - I just couldn't understand what was going on though I knew if I put my hand up I'd get served with coke or a burger. You don't get that service at football games here.

I went to see a baseball game in America - the New York Mets against the Atlanta Braves. I just didn't get it. Sorry, my friend.

I've become jaded with professional sports when money is splashed over them, which is one of the reasons why I've got into ice hockey here (as opposed to hockey in America's NH.
