DOTTING Is, CROSSING Ts

DOTTING Is, CROSSING Ts

Dotting the Is and crossing the Ts refers to checking the details of something.

I think I spend too much time on checking for details in the pursuit of the perfect and perhaps I should settle for the less-than-perfect.

At work, I notice that it’s often about getting things done by a deadline and not about what is done.

For every course taught, I have to submit a report reviewing my teaching – everyone reports that their teaching is brilliant! I think it’s a flawed exercise and I often don’t submit my reports. I always get called up by my boss about this..

A while back, I submitted a report on my teaching and, as a joke, I wrote that my teaching was terrible. I was not called up by my boss for that!

I can’t stand completing forms that no one reads. In fact, I am form-phobic!

But Eric Holder, the current US Attorney General, believes dotting the Is and crossing Ts is very important when he said: “I actually think that the dotting of the i’s and the crossing of the t’s is what separates the United States, the United Kingdom, our allies, from those who we are fighting.”

It’s very reassuring that the US administration has moved from its war on terror to a new war on detail!

Do you regularly dot the Is and cross the Ts?
Are you a perfectionist?
Are you form-phobic?

From now on, I’m not going to dot the Is and cross the Ts, but instead I’m going to cross my Is only!

Do you regularly dot the Is and cross the Ts? Very seldom, even in my professional life I resisted. I was accused of being more "a doer than a planner". Bean counters and desk jockeys are the Bain of my existence.

Are you a perfectionist? No, I do the best I can, but if it is not perfect, I don't worry about it.

Are you form-phobic? I a not, although a form seem to be needed for everything, so I tolerate them while mumbling and complaining

My real job in life was filled with form filling relating mainly to Tax and accounts. So I was always crossing "t"s and dotting "i"s figuratively speaking.....EVERYTHING had to balance to the penny.

I tend to be a perfectionist....I'm a Mathematician and Q.E.D. is one of my favourite sayings. I don't mind filling in forms at all.....so long as I arrive at the right answer!!!

I try to be thorough, and I try to take time to do a job well, and correctly, but it kind of depends on the job, you know? If I'm building a shaving horse, its utility trumps appearance. If I'm repairing my home, it also needs to look good- within reason. But my job for years was delivering freight, and that was all about time...hurry, hurry, hurry. I don't think I'm a perfectionist, but I can be.

Are you form-phobic?
Not if it's entertaining, and they are almost always NOT entertaining.

I am just as inclined to dot my 'Is' and cross my 'Ts' as I am to cross my 'Is' and dot my 'Ts'. lol

I do tend to be a bit of a perfectionist... It frustrates some people and reassures others, especially those I informally proofread for.

I'm not the least bit form-phobic... I could sit in an office all day long, for years on end, filling in forms and enjoying it.
My eyes just glaze over whenever I see a form. It's just mass-processing of people.

I didn't see a hidden question but I'm very happy for you to answer that hidden question. I always like to keep up.

Making sure that Is are dotted and Ts are crossed is part of my job - the tedious part.

I'm not a perfectionist. Near enough is good enough and I've always been a little scared of perfection.

    Forms can be therapeutic. Sometimes.
I just can't stand forms particularly if they're over a page long!

There's a great quote, which I can't find now, by the Duke of Wellington leading an English army against the Spanish army, railing against the paperwork to get what he needs to fight the war!

I strive to be perfect but I've increasingly realised that it doesn't work for me or anyone else! I now strive to be average; that's quite difficult!

I hope you don't mind if I forward you every form I have to fill in. I've just received a form in the post that I'm too scared to in!

Forms are rarely entertaining for me; they're just a form of bureaucratic control.

I always like a rule that for every new form to fill in introduced, an old form to fill in has to be scrapped. It rarely happens in an organisation!
