DRUNKEN SEX   I’ve just read a review of Gerard Russell’s book, Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East. I love reading book reviews and, no, I don’t pretend to have read the book after reading a review of that book! From the review, this book seems quite interesting in dispelling simplistic notions that the Middle East is dominated by Islam or defined by the Sunni/Shia schism in Islam. The book looks at the Copts in Egypt, the Mandeans in Iraq and the Druze in Lebanon, plus other minority non-Islamic religions in the Middle East. The book tells a story of a Samaritan priest who was shot twice in one night, once by Palestinian gunmen who thought he was an Israeli settler and again by Israeli soldiers who believed he was a Palestinian suicide bomber. But one piece of the book review that stood out for me was Gerard Russell’s account of the Zoroastrians in Iran (formerly Persia). Zoroastrians drink alcohol contrary to Islamic strictures. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus once said, in the words of Russell, “Persians made a decision only if they had considered it twice – once when sober and once when drunk” and “If they made a decision while sober, they would then get drunk and see if it still seemed a good idea.” I’m not quite sure why, but this Zoroastrian advice seems brilliant - at least you think about something twice! When was the last time you got drunk? Do you like drunken (or slightly drunken) sex? When was the last time you had drunken sex? I quite like drunken sex, or at least tipsy sex. Sexual inhibitions disappear and the consequences can always wait to be sorted out later. And you can always hide behind the alcohol. Carpe diem!   |

Last time I got drunk was 29+ years ago when I asked for my wife's hand in marriage. Her Dad and I then proceeded to get drunk! Can't say that I ever had drunken sex, but I sure tried the few times she did get drunk, only to be pushed away!

The last time I got drunk....really drunk was in February 2011 when someone I loved died and there was definitely no sex involved that night....just a large bottle of Bacardi. I like tipsy sex....in fact a bottle of wine beside the bed is good lol. I don't remember the last time I had drunken sex....would be a while ago now as I don't drink much these days and tend to avoid getting drunk as opposed to tipsy before sex cos all I want to do is sleep!  ~~Anais Nin~~

I was drunk last Xmas eve. Sex after one standard drink is nice but I never do that with anyone I don't know well. I have, in the past, experienced a few too many disasters where I served a drink and discover that my guest will drink as much alcohol as is in the place and I'm not into sex with people who are drinking heavily or drunk. The last time I had drunken sex was November the 16th, 1986... It wasn't voluntary and has given me an aversion to drinking in the company of strangers.

Dutch courage is a phrase here which means having some alcohol before doing something that you wouldn't normally do, but it doesn't work if the person has had too much Dutch courage!
