A CONDOM CONNOISSEUR  Men often don’t using condoms when having sex, often citing loss of erection when putting a condom on and decreased sensitivity when having sex with a condom. In 2006, Cynthia Graham of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction at Indian University studied 278 men to see how skilled they were in putting a condom on. She found that three in every ten men had lost their erection on one the past three times they had used a condom. Over half of the men in her study complained about “the fit and the feel of condoms”. A more recent study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2013, found that there were no significant differences in men’s ability to maintain erections and in satisfaction ratings between men who wore condoms and those who didn’t. Though condoms have become thinner and thus helping arousal and increasing sensitivity, this research perhaps suggests that men’s dislike of condoms may be psychological. The Times’ sex counsellor Suzi Godson has recently published advice on how to be a condom connoisseur. Below are her five bits of advice on using a condom: 1. “Taking a condom out of a packet is a technique worth mastering, Suzi Godson writes. She advises to “avoid scissors, teeth or anything sharp which can damage the condom.” 2. She suggests “pinching the ring between your thumb and fingers” to “work out which way a condom is rolled”. 3. Next, according to Suzi Godson, “place it on top of the penis, pinch the reservoir (the closed end of the condom) to eliminate potential air pockets and the condom should then roll easily down the length of the penis.” 4. “It is best to apply a condom when you are kneeling and leaning slightly forward because this position maintains optimal blood flow to your erection.” 5. Finally, she suggests that “to build your confidence you should be aiming to masturbate with a condom at least three times a week.” All good advice I think, though I would also advise people that condoms are not dishwasher-proof … yet! The best advice I could give to a first time condom user would be to not unroll it and try to pull it on like a sock... I had an ex-boyfriend who used this method and wondered why he kept going through the end of them. All cock and no brains! I am especially talented at putting a condom onto a guy using my mouth. Managed it quite well, went on, stayed on, didn't break, so I did it right. Do you notice any decreased sensitivity when having sex while using a condom? Fear of pregnancy while unmarried was a great motivator. I hated them. They aren't nice and don't smell very good before, during or after and especially not long after. [image]
