LET’S TAX RUCKSACKS!

LET’S TAX RUCKSACKS!

I say rucksack; you may say backpack! Whether rucksack or backpack, they aren’t sexy and they should be taxed!

I own only one rucksack, which I tend to take on holiday with me. Though while on holiday, I rarely have the need to use a rucksack. It’s more of a just-in-case item to be packed. I take a lot of just-in-case things, like first aid kits and insect repellents, on holiday with me which I never use.

Do you own a rucksack or backpack?
If so, when do you use a rucksack or backpack?
Do you regularly take things away with you on holiday that you rarely use?

As my small contribution to global economic problems, I propose a tax on people wearing rucksacks or backpacks in urban areas.

Students wearing rucksacks particularly annoy me, especially when they’re on public transport. The student and the rucksack take up the space of two people and therefore they should be charged a double-fare on a bus! Also they are generally oblivious to anyone else on the bus when they twizzle around and whack nearby people with their rucksack as they get off the bus.

In urban areas, people wearing rucksacks and, while we’re at it, people using umbrellas, need to go on a training course on how to wear or use one before being allowed out!

I have a sort of rucksack....it's a coolbag which can be carried on my back....I use it when I take the grandkids on picnics in the summertime.....when it is absolutely essential to have both hands free to hang on to little ones!!!!

Do you own a rucksack or backpack?
I have several, and a small water blivet backpack for warm weather hikes.

If so, when do you use a rucksack or backpack?
On the hikes, of course, but also on vacation and when hiking in the inner city.

Do you regularly take things away with you on holiday that you rarely use?
I try to travel light but it seems like there's always a few things too many. My wife always comes along though and I always use her.

MB carries a backpack when traveling. He packs an extra set of clothes and extra necessities, as well as, his Ipod, Nook and Kindle and the chargers. That way if his luggage doesn't make it, he can survive.
We have a few around the house. My 14 year old carries one daily for school. My 16 year old prefers a smaller version. I don't even like to carry a purse so the only time I use a backpack is beach excursions..

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Do you own a rucksack or backpack?
I own several types from small college style ones, military ones, to huge ones to go for days in the wilderness!

If so, when do you use a rucksack or backpack?
I use one for my fishing equipment...the lures, lines, hooks, etc...
I use one to when I go to the wineries- I put the bottle openers, snacks, sun screen, utensils, plates, and other things.
I use the military rucksack for short hiking trips up to 24 hours and I use the large backpack for extended back trail hiking that takes up to 48 hours or longer!

Do you regularly take things away with you on holiday that you rarely use?
LOL....I am over packer! I plan for contingencies....one never knows! My friends are always impressed or just plain mystified when I open my backpacks!

I much prefer shoulder bags than rucksacks to carry things around.

I guess the photo is a bored father, faced with a delayed flight, at an airport looking after his daughter's bag.

I own a small, stylish black leather backpack which I carry every day when I go out, my casual-sporty jeans and joggers style doesn't lend itself very well to handbags.

It's roughly half the size of a kids school backpack and barely enables me to carry the essentials... Purse, sunglasses, puffer (Ventolin), pain tablets, travel pass wallet, compact folded umbrella, prescriptions, tissues, lozenges, mobile phone and breath mints.

I always make use of everything I take on holidays, I'm not a "just in case" type of bag packer at all. The sunscreen gets used, the cotton swabs get used, the sunburn cream gets used, the insect repellents, band-aids, nail files (emery boards) all get used. I pack with preparedness but don't throw in stuff that I'm unlikely to need or can get cheaply at my destination.
Backpacks and rucksacks are very useful. I'd like to see your stylish backpack as nearly all I see are very functional rather than fashionable.

Don't get me wrong, rucksacks (particularly when combined as a coolbag) are very useful. I would exempt you from my rucksack tax!

I must confess I take a rucksack with me when I'm travelling. A rucksack is good for carrying things around while keeping both hands free.

Military rucksacks are the best. It's amazing what you can pack in them!

My proposed rucksack tax would only apply to rucksack wearers in cities, though if this doesn't raise enough revenue I may propose the tax to extend to the countryside!

I also own a backpack; they are useful particularly when travelling. I'm going to tax myself; I withdraw my proposal for backpack tax immediately!

I have several backpacks. All smallish ones without frames. I use at least one of them most weeks for carrying swimming kit to the pool. I find them much easier than bags carried in the hand or with a shoulder strap.

The problem with backpackers and public transport is more to do with the people than their luggage I imagine!

How would you know you were on holiday without those essential, non-used items?
Those essential things you pack often become the least essential on holiday. I always pack too many first aid items when going on holiday!
