SIR VIAGRA

Every New Year, the Queen issues a New Years Honours List announcing the bestowal of honours on people from the UK and other Commonwealth countries.

Non-Commonwealth citizens can be given honorary awards. In 2005, the Queen bestowed Bill Gates with an honorary knighthood.

The honours system, especially the award of knighthoods and damehoods, is a key part of the British Establishment.

The history of honours is largely rooted in the Middle Ages. The honour of a knighthood comes from the days of medieval chivalry. In conferring knighthoods, the sovereign touches the recipient with a sword.

Above is a photo of the cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins being touched by the sword of the Queen at his investiture.

The main honours awarded, in descending order of honour, are: Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of St Patrick, Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George, Royal Victorian Order, Order of the Companions of Honour, Distinguished Service Order, and Orders of the British Empire embracing the three ranks of Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) - see above for the CBE, OBE and MBE medals.

The award of honours has long been controversial. In 1925, after the Liberal Prime Minister David Lloyd George was caught selling honours, legislation was passed to prevent the sale of peerages and other honours

In 2006 and 2007, the Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair was caught giving honours to rich people who made generous donations to the Labour Party.

The deceased radio and television presenter Jimmy Savile, and Britain’s most prolific p aedophile, was knighted after being nominated by the Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Another p aedophile, Rolf Harris, was also honoured with a CBE. The Establishment!

Have you ever been honoured with an award?
Would you accept an honour from the British Queen?

I've been honoured with a few cub scout badges!
Not that I’m likely to be nominated for an honour from the Queen but I think I'd turn it down if I was.

In this year’s New Year’s Honours List, over 1,000 people are to be honoured, including Joan Collins and John Hurt - they will now become Dame Joan Collins and Sir John Hurt.

Also honoured is Dr Simon Campbell, a Pfizer research chemist who played a lead role in developing Viagra, who is to be given a knighthood. He will now be known as Sir Simon Campbell.

Arise Sir Viagra!

I'm not likely to be honored in such a way.

THIS is certainly an award-worthy shot I'd think!

That sword is pretty long for her to be wielding at her age. And if the second pic be YOUR sword... wow.

Have a great 2015!

Have you ever been honoured with an award?
I most certainly have! In fact, policemen have been sent out to find me, stop me, and award me a citation personally and right on the spot!

Would you accept an honour from the British Queen?
She'd have to catch me first!

LOL I've never done anything to merit an award and if I ever got one I'd be too surprised to accept it!!!

I can't imagine the circumstances when the UK and the US would not be allies.

I have never been honoured with an award.

I don't know whether I could earn an honour award from the Queen in what remains of her lifetime and unless I thought the honour award was apropriate to something I had achieved for the benefit of humanity, I would find it too frivolous to accept but then again, if Prince Harry was monarch... Just to meet him, I'd probably accept the Honour Award no matter how undeserving I thought I was.
A lot of people seem to want to meet Prince Harry!

I've not been honoured and I've not done anything to deserve to be! If somehow, I found myself in the position of deserving an honour, I've be torn between accepting it on merit and declining it on principle.
