ROMAN CHARITY   Most people like these paintings until they know the story. What is initially seen as erotic (or at least an attempt to be erotic) often provokes reactions of repugnance, acceptance and eventually admiration as the story unfolds. Roman Charity is an enduring story of a woman Pero who secretly breastfeeds her father, Cimon, after he is imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation. Her father is taking breast milk from her to keep him alive while imprisoned. The story is recorded by the ancient Roman historian Valerius Maximusin’s Nine Books of Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans. Many artists, including Caravaggio, have painted this scene. Above are the photograph of Max Sauco and the paintings of Dirck van Baberen (c1623); and below are Peter Paul Rubens (c1612), and an unknown Pompeii fresco (mid-first century). She is glancing off to her right, watchfully, and has the look of a loving child. Were you breast-fed as a baby? for a brief time, and then switched to a bottle. I approve of breast feeding in private and in public. Have you tasted breast milk as an adult? Yes. I think that kind of feeding is best practiced in private. It's a great story, which is also told in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath book.

I forgot to ask my mother whether I was breast-fed or not. I'll never know because there's no point asking my younger brother!

I don't have any inklings to breast-feed from a lactating woman. Things may change if I ever starve in the future though!
