NEARLY A WHITE CHRISTMAS
NEARLY A WHITE CHRISTMAS It was nearly a white Christmas here. Though it didn’t snow on Christmas Day, it did snow on Boxing Day, the day after. In England, it’s not common to get a white Christmas; snow mainly falls later in January and February. Above is a sunrise over Axe Edge in the Peak District, a few miles from where I live. The Peak District was the UK’s first national park in 1951. Two days ago, a flurry of snow descended causing transport chaos in England - roads were closed, trains were cancelled and airports were shut for a while. Okay, it was a bit more of a flurry! Transport-wise, this country cannot handle any extreme weather. Below is a gallery of native animals that flourish during English winters - a deer, a robin, a fox, a red grouse, a mountain hare, a snowy owl, a white stoat and a pheasant, plus two dogs enjoying the snow! How much snow do you normally get where you live? What are the common native animals found where you live? |

How much snow do you normally get where you live? In an average year, about 3-4 feet over the winter. What are the common native animals found where you live? Squirrels, deer and the occasional black bear. And of course myriad bird varieties

Though I have lived in many areas that get snow, where I currently live, it is very uncommon. The last snow was 25 years ago. We have squirrels, raccoons, armadillo, opossum, deer, eagles, osprey, alligators, river otters, dolphins, shark...The list can go on for days.

We don't get much snow in Dublin....it's sort of sheltered here and misses us most of the time. The last time I remember any snow which lay on the ground was the Winter of 2010/2011 when I was snowed in twice....at the start of December for a week and then again for Christmas day!!! So far we have missed the current wave of snow. Phew!!! ~~Anais Nin~~

I love these photos....especially the dogs enjoying the zipless fuck! We average six feet of snow and last year we got ten. We have all the critters here that you'd normally find in the north woods. On my property we see deer, turkey, coyotes and hawks. The undergrowth is crawling with varmints- coons, woodchucks, all manner of squirrels as well as mice, shrews and voles. And moles- there are lots of moles. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

Beautiful images, S... The one of the stoat is hilarious. It never snows where I live... It snows in the mountains and snowfields but they are a long distance from where I live. We have possums, sparrows, cranes, magpies, kookaburras common to my area. There may be others but I pay less attention to nature than to more intellectual pursuits.

I'm moving to where you two live. That's a fantastic array of wildlife on your doorstep.

Weather-wise, England doesn't do extremes!

The last male cat I had that wasn't neutered would go on a tom "heat" every time there was snowfall. Maybe the snow silenced most environmental odors and a female's scent was easier to discern in the atmosphere. It was ridiculously funny to see him howling and running out the door through the snow to get his piece of tail.
