MOTD
MOTD Tonight I’m waiting for Match of the Day (MOTD) to come on. This BBC football (soccer) highlights show has been going on for 50 years. It’s been a constant television show in my life. Only Blue Peter and Doctor Who can compare as television constants, but unlike Blue Peter and Doctor Who, I’ve always watched MOTD. Twenty years ago I complained that MOTD started too early (about 10.30pm) as I was often out in the evening. Now I complain it starts too late as I don’t go out so much! The theme tune of MOTD has remained the same, though remixed, since 1970. It was compiled by Barry Stoller, who was told by the BBC to write “something good”. He did! Are you a football (or soccer) fan? Are there any television constants in your life? Do you get more sentimental as you get older? |

Wow what a long lived program. That is amazing Are you a football (or soccer) fan? Not a real fan. Is fun to watch, not a priority though Are there any television constants in your life? As biased as it is getting, I am a fan of ABC Morning and evening news Do you get more sentimental as you get older? Incredibly more and more sentimental. Must be old age

I watch some football. I try to see some games played by the University of Michigan, and occasionally watch the Chicago Bears, but I'm kind of put off by all the hyping that TV does to all sports. I'm impressed by the team the green bay packers fielded this year, so I'll probably watch more of them- with the sound often turned off. I love watching baseball. Someone who's becoming a constant is John Oliver. I liked him from the first and he just gets better. I don't know that i'm so much more sentimental now than when I was young, but I am slower, so I will linger with a memory. I also have more of them! Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I'm definitely a football fan....but actually prefer Rugby. My constant has always been Casualty. I do find that I am a lot more sentimental now than I used to be. ~~Anais Nin~~

We watch some football & soccer but not a priority. What is a priority is watching our two grandsons play soccer. Went to a game this morning and he won 10/3! News and weather is a constant for me. I have always been sentimental!

I am not much of a soccer fan... Constant television...hhhmmm I lived in too many countries as a child to have consistent programing but I have watched Sesame Street off and on for 46 years. I do get sentimental about movies and occasionally a TV show. Last night "It's A Wonderful Life" was aired. It just isn't Christmas without watching George Baily find out how he impacts his town and the lives of those around him.

I hope that by showing us the Stoller work, you don't get into trouble for breach of copyright. I intermittently become obsessive about various codes of football, sometimes for months, sometimes for many years but not so much in the last two years. I have no idea why. The only current constants in my life are cartoons, the news any any Agatha Christie 'made for television' programs that are on. They are currently doing reruns of Poirot with the incomparable David Suchet. Always enjoyable. I'm not really sure that I have much to be sentimental about. Sentimentality seems to be the domain of people who think about "the good, old days" and almost nothing in my memories is good. For some reason best known to itself, my mind views the past with the attitude of being grateful that it's in the past. I guess that makes me 'forward-looking'. I like the Agatha Christie stories shown on television, though I wasn't a big fan of David Suchet as Hercule Poirot. [image]

I love South Park! I hope you are behind van Gaal, who looks as if he's gradually reversing Man Utd's slide. I am a Leeds United fan - they're rubbish at the moment!

I'm a bit of a news junkie and a bit of a sentimental hoarder as well!

I was never sentimental until a few years ago. I think blogging has made me more sentimental.

I'm sure Match of the Day is the equivalent. I'd love to watch an ice hockey highlights programme but we can't get it here unless I pay!

Good joke. I love MOTD's theme tune; it's one of my constants in life.

Man Utd's results have improved recently and they're now in fourth position, a Champions League place, but as you say there's lots more football to play.

Do you have a favourite Poirot? I think David Suchet minces too much when he walks which is a bit much for a detective. Albert Finney was excellent in Murder On The Orient Express and I was disappointed that he didn't play the role a few more times. I found Peter Ustinov in Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun etc a bit too comical for my taste, even though Evil Under The Sun is made wonderful by Dame Maggie Smith (though not a "Dame" at the time of the movie). I'm more of a Miss Marples fan though.

Who is your favourite Miss Jane Marple? I finally got the Joan Hickson boxed set that I so desperately wanted for Christmas last year (see pic).

I have the wonderful Angela Lansbury in 'The Mirror Crack'd' opposite Elisabeth Taylor but loved her most in 'Bedknobs And Broomsticks' and 'Mrs 'arris Goes To Paris'.

|
I also enjoyed her acting as Jessica Fletcher but found the plotlines of many of the episodes implausible.
