BROTHEL CREEPERS
BROTHEL CREEPERS Brothel creepers, often called creepers, are shoes with thick crepe soles and often suede uppers. They became popular after the Second World War and they have been in and out of fashion ever since. In the mid-1950s, the Soviet stilyagi often made their own brothel creepers called 'shoes on semolina'. Stilyagi were influenced by Western fashion and music - below is a shot from the 2008 film Stilyagi. Brothel creepers have been part of many youth subcultures. In the late 1950s, teddy boys often wore brothel creepers - see above. In the mid-to-late 1970s, brothel creepers were popular with punks. How do you call the shoes - brothel creepers, creepers or another term? Have you ever worn a pair of brothel creepers? If so, when did you wear them? I was a proud owner of a pair of brothel creepers in the mid-1970s. They were useless in the mud and rain, and I probably only liked them because of their name - wearing them was a very small act of rebellion at boarding school! It’s widely believed that the shoes were called brothel creepers after British soldiers, dubbed desert rats, returned home in 1945 after fighting in North Africa. Soldiers fighting in the desert were issued with crepe rubber-soled suede boots. On returning home, the soldiers often wore them when going out to get drunk and laid in London; hence the term 'brothel creepers'. |

I never heard them called brothel creepers. I did own a pair of crepe soled shoes in the mid seventies- they were "Earth Shoes". The sole was thicker under the toes than at the heel, lifting the toes higher. It was supposed to be healthier for your feet- who knew? They WERE very comfortable. But then, a brothel can be pretty cushy, too. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.
