AN EMERGENCY BRA

While researching for a recent blog post on the Ig Nobel prizes - see JESUS ON TOAST - I came across many other interesting Ig Nobel prize winners for research that “makes people laugh and then think.”

At the 2009 award ceremony held at Harvard University, the Ig Nobel prize for public health was awarded to a research team led by Dr Elena Bodnar, the President of the Trauma Risk Management Research Institute in Chicago.

The research team invented a bra that, in an emergency, can be converted into a protective face mask. Dr Bodnar successfully secured a US patent for the emergency bra. It is now on the market as the RAD emergency bra, with each bra costing a mere $49-99.

Please never say that research is useless!

According to the company’s website:
“The Emergency Bra's primary function is that of a conventional bra. In case of emergency, it can be quickly and easily converted into two face masks without removing any clothes. In case of emergency, where no specialized respiratory devices are available, it can decrease the inhalation of harmful airborne particles. Because the Emergency Bra masks can be securely fixed to the head, it frees a survivor’s hands to keep balance while running and removing objects on the way out of danger. In certain situations, by providing the wearer with a sense of security and protection, the Emergency Bra can reduce the chance of panic attack.”

“The RAD Emergency Bra is a specialty Emergency Bra: a brasserie [sic] convertible into face masks with a radiation sensor incorporated into the body of the bra. In the event of an emergency, look for a change of color in the upper opening of the sensor’s pocket located under the front clasps of the brassiere. If the top opening (sensor strip) has developed a color darker than that of the lower opening (service life strip), convert the Emergency Bra into face masks and apply the mask while proceeding with the evacuation.”

Yes, the company’s website does say brasserie and not brassiere; or perhaps the emergency bra can also be turned into a pop-up restaurant!

“The current model of the RAD Emergency Bra incorporates a radiation sensor to warn the wearer of the presence of ionizing radiation in the event of a ‘dirty’ bomb explosion or any other type of nuclear release involving high energy gamma rays.”

“With sensor technology rapidly developing, different sensors, such as biological, chemical, and so forth, will be incorporated into the Emergency Bra in the future. The purpose of these sensors is to detect the presence of harmful airborne particles that require the use of respiratory protective masks.”

However, the company warns that its emergency bra should not be exposed to temperatures above 60ºC. So, a fire is not an emergency!

Also, the company posted the following two disclaimers:

“The Emergency Bra is not a substitute for specialized protective respiratory devices, and should not be used when specialized equipment is required or available. It is intended to be used as a facemask while escaping from a dangerous environment during emergency situations only when no specialized protective devices are available.”

“The Emergency Bra is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

In other words, it’s bloody useless!

To me, this company is selling a product based on largely unfounded popular fears of terrorist attacks.

But I’m still trying to get my head around this invention. Just imagine if there’s an emergency, and a woman shouts out, “Don’t worry, I’m wearing an emergency bra”; I would probably end up laughing and die!

Would you ever wear this bra in an emergency?
Is $49-99 (about £30) a reasonable amount to pay for a bra?
Can you think of any other uses for a bra?

Yesterday I applied for a patent for a bra that can be quickly converted into not one umbrella but two umbrellas for when there's a downpour!

Sorry for the length of this post but I did enjoy compiling this one!

Well, there are certain situations where people have been know to wind up with a bra on their heads, so I presume that creating a bra that also doubles as a face mask has some merit.
it at least kept Dr. Bodnar and her team busy for some time developing this, but I really would like to see the research review videos of the functional demonstrations and how many boobs popped out while the tester was attempting to get the cup out without removing any clothing.
And understand that someone actually funded this research and then the sales and marketing.

It is a useless for a mask...what does it protect you from? Nothing!! Probably sucks as a bra too....thus it's a useless brassiere! What is the point in buying this....it is just a novelty item!! From my FWB....some bras are very costly!! Bras can be used as a sling!!! I used it when I was a little boy....taking mom's bra and flinging rocks with it! She did not appreciate this usage! LOL!

I'd put my face in that! It might be useful for sticking up banks, too!

I know several women who were able to remove their bras without having to remove any of their other clothes. Then there were other who couldn't quite match that feat and ended up giving us a nice show.

I would enjoy being there when the women are doing the emergency drills and taking off their emergency bras. I want to see how many had mastered the art of taking off their bras without revealing anything, and then helping those who needed more practice.

Would you ever wear this bra in an emergency? Oh no.

Homeland security once advocated sealing yourself in a closet with duct tape and plastic in the event of a chemical, biological or ''dirty bomb'' attack. Store shelves were bare of duct tape and plastic very shortly after. Recently I saw Ed Rendell, who was in charge of homeland security at the time, on MSNBC, laughing about such advice. They knew it wouldn't work, but it was offered as a way to stem panic, by giving people the means to protect themselves or the perceived means of protecting themselves. Unfortunately I also heard that a mother and her two sons died in a room where they sealed themselves in with duct tape and plastic. It prevented air from entering the room, but a coal stove in the room depleted all the oxygen and led to their deaths by suffocation.

Is $49-99 (about £30) a reasonable amount to pay for a bra?
That seems to be the going rate here, well for me anyway. I DD-on't think certain girls can get away paying less than 49 DD-ollars for a bra.

Can you think of any other uses for a bra?
A tisket a tasket, it might make a fine basket if you happen upon ripe berries in the lane.

Yesterday I applied for a patent for a bra that can be quickly converted into two umbrellas for when it rains heavily! Oh you know umbrellas are pretty much useless there and you are just asking for trouble with that design, it's liable to turn into a para-sail and then who the heck knows where you'll end up. Maybe Wales and you wouldn't want to do that.

A brasserie in a bra would be handy though. Could you work on the patent for one of those?
I'll apply for a patent for a brasserie-cum-bra if you apply for a patent for a fruit basket-cum bra. We're both going to get seriously rich!

I agree with you; all test results of the emergency bra should be made public!
Thanks for stopping by.

A sling is a great alternative use for a bra.

Sorry S, that gif at the top of your post is scaring me too much for me to give this post the attention it likely deserves. $50 is a fairly average amount to pay for a bra in australia.
I've never bought a bra.
