WHAT HAVE THE EUROPEANS EVER DONE FOR US?     This last week, I’ve been mesmerised by the landing on the ‘rubber duck’ comet, also known as the Churyumov-Gerasimenko 67P comet. On 2 March 2004, the European Space Agency’s spacecraft Rosetta was launched; in August 2014, Rosetta started to orbit the comet; and, on 12 November 2014, Rosetta’s probe Philae landed on the comet. Incredible! The Rosetta mission has been partially successful. It involved landing on the comet, after a flyby of Mars and two asteroids - mission accomplished. But it also involved keeping the landing probe on the comet until December 2015 - mission not yet accomplished and maybe never to be accomplished. The washing machine-sized Philae landed on the dark side of the comet, in a shadow under a cliff, thus preventing its solar batteries being fully recharged. European Space Agency scientists will probably get Philae to do a hop soon in the hope of getting it to land in a new sunnier location. However, all the data gathered by the experiments conducted so far have been sent back to Earth - or more precisely, the European Space Agency’s centre in Darmstadt, Germany. This data may reveal a lot about life on Earth as one theory of life on Earth suggests comets delivered water (and thus life) to this planet. Disappointingly, no Clanger was found on the comet and no pepperoni pizza can be delivered by Domino’s to the comet … yet! But the Rosetta mission has revealed that the Open University’s Professor Monica Grady, a space scientist who watched the landing in Darmstadt, has a fine pair of jiggling breasts - see below! The Soviet Vostok mission to send a man into space for the first time was amazing. The American Apollo mission to put a man on the moon was even more amazing. The multinational International Space Station mission is also amazing. But the European Space Agency mission, that involved landing on a comet, travelling at 34,000mph, 250 million miles from Earth, is even more amazing. The Europeans can do something apart from colonising much of the world, enslaving lots of African people and killing lots of people in two world wars! Europe colonised a comet with no people to enslave or kill instead! In defence, Europe has also given the world the Enlightenment period when science beat religion as an explanation for things, the Industrial Revolution, the welfare state, republicanism and the European Union, arguably the most successful attempt to make nation-states get on with each other. I think another point that needs to be made is that it’s governments not companies that best do space exploration - that’s a wink to the tragic Virgin Galactic experiment. I think it was one hell of an achievement to land that probe on the comet and I commend the European Space Agency for their achievement. Are you closely following the Rosetta comet mission? yes Do you think the massive investment in space exploration can be justified? Yes. Besides the knowledge we gain from space exploration, there are a number of what are now everyday consumer items that were originally developed for the space program. Tang, the instant orange drink was the first to be a commercial success although I'm not sure if it's even made any longer. Microwave ovens and Velcro, along with a number of new ceramic materials used in industry were all developed for the space program, so I think the investment was justified. What have the Europeans ever done for us? There are a number of things that the Europeans did for us. The ancient Greeks provided us with the basics tenants of democracy. Gutenberg invented the printing press and movable type, which caused a revolution in communications even more profound than what the internet is today. And the most important thing that Europeans did for us was to send so many of their people here who explored and developed this country, making it what it is today, for better or worse.

Their choice though, waste valuable resources on something that would have resulted in totally useless information, if it worked perfectly What have the Europeans ever done for us? They have been involved in the fabric of history as we know it.

I have been watching the Rosetta/comet news. The batteries are now dead and it might be the end!! I think too much money is being spent! When "Yourapeein" you get relief!

1. Yep, it's absolutely fascinating and enthralling. 2. Yep, as long as the knowledge is being fairly distributed to all, as it seems to be, I think this is a worthwhile investment in human evolution. 3.  Might be easier to ask that question the other way around, as in, what have they not done for us!!

I do mean the Romans as well as the Greeks, French, Spanish, British, Italian, Dutch, German, Portuguese, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish. Belgian, etc.

I have very scant interest in the Rosetta commet mission. I do think that, for the most part, the massive investment in space exploration can be justified. Once we kill this planet, we will need to find another relatively hospitable one to colonise. I think that for all the negative they have done over the centuries, the Europeans have done quite a lot of good... As peryour list and they have brought many fascinating elements to the world's cuisine. Cuisine is an area where all countries can contribute, though there are some cuisines I don't like or I'm not accustomed to.

Thank you for the link! Yes, I've followed it closely. The cost can be entirely justified; not only for the scientific data gathered but as an example, along with CERN and ITER, of how nations can work together for a common goal. Pretty well everything we consider to be civilised, including civilisation itself has a European origin. The problem is, pretty well everything we consider as evil or depraved has a European origin too! America, or course, is very much a product of Europe!
