IN PRAISE OF ICELAND  The World Economic Forum, which holds the preposterous Davos annual summits where global business and political leaders meet, has just published a report on global gender inequality, The Global Gender Gap Report 2014 measured gender inequality of 142 countries according to economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. The top ten countries for gender equality are: 1. Iceland 2. Finland 3. Norway 4. Sweden 5. Denmark 6. Nicaragua 7. Rwanda 8. Ireland 9. Philippines 10. Belgium And here are the rankings of other selected countries: Germany (12), New Zealand (13), Netherlands (14), France (16), South Africa (18 ), Canada (19), United States (20), Australia (24), United Kingdom (26), Cuba (30), Israel (65), Italy (69), Brazil (71), Russia (75), Mexico (80), China (87), Greece (91), Japan (104), India (114), and Saudi Arabia (130). And the bottom ten countries for gender inequality are: 133. Morocco 134. Jordan 135. Lebanon 136. Ivory Coast 137. Iran 138. Mali 139. Syria 140. Chad 141. Pakistan 142. Yemen  These rankings measure the gender gaps between men and women in each country; they are not measuring gaps between countries. Having fallen from 9th to 26th since last year, Britain is a more unequal place than Nicaragua, even though British women are paid much more, are more educated and live longer than Nicaraguan women. No country has achieved gender equality, though the gender gaps for both economic participation and opportunity and political empowerment have narrowed. The gender gap is narrowest in terms of health and survival, but the gap has increased over the past nine years. Regarding educational attainment, 25 countries had no gender gap. Research consistently shows that people are happier in more equal than less equal countries. Providing basic human needs are met, increasing prosperity does not equate with happiness. I do believe strongly in trying to shore up equality between the sexes. Now that being said it was very hard for a women to raise up in the Military into any higher position.. Quick pointless question: Do we know whether the couple enjoying Iceland's blue lagoon are residents of Iceland or tourists? 1. Yes I am... I would not have expected Rwanda to be as high on the sexual equality list, Nicaragua surprises me too... Just a helpful, little aside, if you want to get rid of the googly-eyed emoticon for #18, you need to space between the 8 and the ). 2. Have I been called a feminist? I've been called a ballbreaker... I think that's similar. 3. Am I a feminist? I believe strongly in trying to shore up equality between the sexes. Having said that, women are tough but more physically delicate than men and usually aren't capable of withstanding the same level of physical punishment orviolence against them as men. Not that I am suggesting that men should have to endure it, either. Men have larger, stronger bones and literally thicker skin to better insulate them. A by-product of testosterone production.  I'm now worried that you're a ball-breaking feminist!

I spent a holiday in Iceland. It's a fascinating place to visit. It's more American than most European countries which, I guess, should not be too surprising given that it's an island in the middle of North America and Europe.

The criteria they used seem meaningful to me though, like with any survey, there's a limit what you can measure by a questionnaire.

I think you are a feminist. There are many different ways, from the militant to the non-militant, to achieve equality. The key thing is that we're all moving in the same direction.
