VIRGIN NUN TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

The latest online viral sensation is the Italian nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia. Dubbed the Singing Nun, she is the latest winner of the Italian version of The Voice, a popular television talent show, after a rendition of Alicia Keys' hit song, No One, while wearing a black habit and crucifix.

On the television show, , she also performed Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Mariah Carey’s Hero, Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer, Irene Cara’s Flashdance … What a Feeling, and Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ (I've Had) The Time of My Life popularised in the Dirty Dancing film.

Sister Cristina also appeared on stage with Kylie Minogue singing Can’t Get You out of My Head - see above - and with Ricky Martin, a gay pop star, singing The Cup of Life. Pope Francis will be pleased!

The Singing Nun also secured a record contract for winning the contest. Her first album, to be released next month, features many of the above songs, plus covers of hit songs by Coldplay, Jessie J and, most controversially, Madonna.

The album includes a version of Madonna’s 1984 hit song, Like a Virgin, which was widely regarded at the time as an attack on the Catholic Church.

Unsurprisingly, much of the Catholic establishment, including many bishops but not Pope Francis, has condemned the nun for singing Madonna’s song.

The Italian Catholic news agency, Servizio Informazione Religiosa, called Sister Cristina’s singing activities as a “reckless and calculated commercial operation”. The Catholic magazine, Famiglia Cristiana, described the nun as displaying “prima donna behaviour”.

From America, Barbara Nicolosi, a prominent Catholic and Hollywood screenwriter, likened the nun’s recording of Like a Virgin to “a group of Israeli teenagers suddenly thinking it would be cool to put a swastika on their T-shirts.”

However, the Singing Nun has been blessed by the celebrated Hollywood nun, Whoopi Goldberg. Madonna has also rushed to support Sister Cristina for the cover of her song and even posted the photoshopped image of them both on Instagram and Twitter - see below.

Have you heard Sister Cristina Scuccia sing?
Do you think the Catholic Church has a sense of humour?
Are you a fan of Madonna?

Earlier today, I listened to the Singing Nun’s version of Like a Virgin on the radio. It was a bit of a dirge. Give me Madonna any day!

The original Singing Nun was Sister Luc-Gabrielle, born Jeanine Deckers. As a nun, she had a worldwide hit with the song, Dominique in 1963.

Have you heard Sister Cristina Scuccia sing? I have, and she has a delightful voice. I think it is humanizing the church. I would guess that is a good thing

Do you think the Catholic Church has a sense of humour? I am not so sure of that. I am not Catholic and a couple of times I volunteered to help with a community project. When the Father saw I was not of his flock, he sent word not to show up. Not a thank you , but do not show up. Soured me on it.

Are you a fan of Madonna? Never cared for her

I saw a news story of Sister Cristina Scuccia sing and was indifferent.

The catholic church does not have a sense of humour but the pope seems to.

I was a big fan of Madonna during the 80s but less so in recent years.

Do you remember Sister Janet Mead's semi-rock version of "The Lord's Prayer" from 1974? I think her voice was nicer than this singing nun.
I haven't come across Sister Janet Mead's The Lord's Prayer until you mentioned her. I must check her out. Thanks.

Perhaps Rory, now he's single, will start dating Madonna!

I was a big fan of Madonna in the 198os and 1990s but I'm not so keen on her music now.

Like you, I think Sister Cristina helps to humanise the church, something that many churches need to do more.

Often people who are raised as Catholics are the biggest critics of the Roman Catholic church. Though not a Catholic nor religious, the present Pope seems to be moving things in the right direction.

The video can be goog'd and utoob'd... It turns out that it was done in 1973, not 1974 as I originally quoted... I don't think it was any earlier than November or December 1973 because the first time I heard it, I was 8 years old.
I checked out Sister Janet Mead's rendition of The Lord's Prayer. though not religious, I thought her performance to be quite good.
Thanks.
PS I've got well behind with replying to comments again!

Yes, I like some of her stuff!
The Roman Catholic church seems totally devoid of a sense of humour!
