SAUCY

Earlier this week the Canadian-born English actress Lynda Bellingham died from cancer.

Lynda Bellingham appeared in many television series like General Hospital, All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who, The Bill and Robin Hood, as well as appearing in films such as Confessions of a Driving Instructor and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers.

The actress was perhaps most famous for appearing in a series of adverts for Oxo gravy between 1983 and 1999.

Gravy was a staple of my childhood diet. Almost every hot meal was served with lashings of gravy.

I still like gravy but as I’ve got older, I’ve branched out with different sauces to accompany my meals.

I tend to accompany certain meals with the same sauces - roast beef with horseradish sauce; roast lamb with mint sauce or mint jelly; roast chicken and roast turkey with bread sauce; fish with parsley sauce; steak with English mustard sauce; salad with mayonnaise; sausages with brown sauce; cauliflower with cheese sauce, and fish and chips with tomato ketchup.

Other sauces I like are sweet chilli sauce with fish, hoisin (plum-based) sauce with crispy aromatic duck and satay (peanut-based) sauce with chicken and beef skewers.

The sauces I don’t like much are apple sauce, cranberry sauce and tartar sauce.

Do you make gravy from the juices of meat or from granules or stock cubes?
What sauces do you like with your savoury meals?
What are your most and least favourite sauces?

In August this year, the eighth World Gravy Wrestling Championship took place outside a Lancashire pub to raise monies for charity. 20 gravy wrestlers, 14 men and 6 women, fought each other in 1,500 litres of gravy to be crowned the world gravy wrestling champion - see below.

I make gravy from the juices and from powders when no juice or in a hurry! I like a "thick" gravy...not an "au ju"!
I make cranberry sauce from fresh berries when having turkey, but I don't eat it...the others do!
I like fresh fish in a lemon/dill sauce and tartar sauce with battered fish. I use lots of ketchup in chili and spaghetti sauce and of course "on fries"! I use a variety of sauces with chicken wings...BBQ, teryaki, honey garlic.....Franks hot sauce for the wife!
My stomach is not a fan of hot sauces!

You're the first person I've come across who doesn't like tomato ketchup.

Thick gravy is so much better than the jus the French make.

I hope you turn the hot peppers you grow into a nice hot pepper sauce.

    R.I.P: Lynda Bellingham.

I have made gravy from meat juices and from granules and powders at various times but not a big fan of gravy so never make it just for myself.

The sauces that I like with my savoury meals are all and any chilli based, pepper based sauces (the hotter, the better, I also love barbeque sauce, plum sauce, black bean sauce, HP sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Szechuan sauce, sweet chilli sauce, sweet and sour sauce, mustard, Hoisin sauce, Soy sauce, cheese sauce and occasionally tomato sauce...

My favourites are: Sriracha chilli sauce, The original Tabasco sauce, Habaniero Tabasco, Frank's Red Hot Xtra Hot Cayenne Pepper sauce, Nando's Extra Hot Peri-Peri sauce, ABC Extra hot chili sauce, Ayam Hot chilli sauce, Frank's Red Hot Xtra hot, HP, Worcestershire sauce, ElYucateco XXXtra hot Habaniero chili sauce, Soy sauce and most types of mustard (we have a variety in australia)...

Sauces I don't like are: White sauce, fish sauce, hollandaise, apple sauce, Satay sauce, mayonnaise, cranberry, chicken liver sauce and as stated earlier, gravy.
I like Worcestershire sauce too. I can't believe the recipe has remained secret for so long.

    NO!
What sauces do you like with your savory meals?
    Mayo...if that is a sauce!
What are your most and least favourite sauces?
I have to stay away from spicy sauces!
I think mayonnaise counts as a sauce.
I used to love the mayonnaise that my grandmother used to make - nothing else can compare to it now.
