BEST DRUMMER?

This weekend I had a discussion with a friend about drummers, who is or was the best drummer.

Our roll-call, over a few beers, included: Keith Moon (The Who), Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Don Henley (Eagles), Tommy Ramone (Ramones), Kevin Godley (10cc), Phil Collins (Genesis), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ginger Baker (Cream), Clem Burke (Blondie), Tony Connor (Hot Chocolate), Rick Allen (Def Leppard), Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters), Neil Peart (Rush), Dave Rowntree (Blur), Bill Ficca (Television), Stephen Morris (Joy Division/New Order), Buddy Rich (big band drummer), John Densmore (The Doors), Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Will Champion (Coldplay), Josh Freese (Devo), Bernard Purdie (session funk drummer), Moe Tucker (The Velvet Underground), Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck Group/Rainbow), Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Mick Avory (The KInks), John Coghlan (Status Quo), Meg White (The White Stripes), Rick Buckler (The Jam), Larry Mullen Jr (U2), Topper Headon (The Clash), Bill Berry (R.E.M.), Max Weinberg (Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band), Julian Lennon (John Lennon's ), Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy), Chris Frantz (Talking Heads), Tony Thompson (Chic), Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Phil Selway (Radiohead), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Jon Moss (Culture Club), and Lars Ulrich (Metallica).

For once we agreed, which is perhaps not so surprising given we share similar music tastes. We thought that Ringo Starr was the worst drummer and Stephen Morris was the best drummer of all time. Stephen Morris used electronics when he drummed.

As an aside, we thought that Phil Collins was the most annoying drummer.

Below is Stephen Morris playing drums at Joy Division’s last live gig at the University of Birmingham’s Chamberlain Hall on 2 May 1980. I was there! Soon after this gig, Joy Division’s singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. Joy Division then became New Order.

Who do you think is the best drummer of all time?
Have you played on a drum kit?

I have played on a drum kit many times but never naked. It’s great fun banging away - I can keep drums to David Bowie's The Jean Genie.

In the 1980s I was in a new wave band as a guitarist, but I always fancied myself as a drummer. The band is immortalised on a YouTube clip. The band’s drummer committed suicide a couple of years ago. JT, RIP!

My pick for best drummer is Sandy Nelson, an American drummer. Nelson, one of the best-known rock drummers of the early 1960s, had several solo instrumental Top 40 hits and was a session drummer on many other well-known hits, and released over 30 albums. Yes I have beatin' the skins a few times but back in the 70's-80's! and never thought about doing it naked!

I have always wanted to learn how to play the drums. Any time I am listening to music I drum along with my hands of whatever is handy. My steering wheel most often.

Dave Grohl is pretty good. Buddy Rich would be my top choice though. I love Jazz so it is a natural choice for me.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Really depends on the style of music, each requires a different approach to the music.
Very true, but people still choose their favourites even if subjectively chosen.
Thanks for stopping by.

I don't like drum-only music, but I realise that a band without a drummer often plays out of time. The drummer and bass player keep the band together.

I know it's all for fun, but that's a bizarre list of drummers with some very odd inclusions and glaring omissions!

"Good" drumming needn't always be technically challenging so the individual skills of the drummer are not necessarily on show in any consistent manner. I certainly have favourites but I'd decline to call any of them, "The Best". I would however disagree with all of your choices!

Yes, I've play around on drum kits - but not often enough!
I only reported the names of the drummers mentioned in the conversation with my friend. Clearly different people will have different lists.
I can fully understand some bizarre inclusions reflecting our music tastes, but I'm not so sure there's many glaring omissions having looked at a few more of these lists on the internet.

It's nice to see there's a Ringo Starr fan around.

Thank you, though the list was compiled in an increasingly drunken conversation!

I've not come across Sandy Nelson but I'm going to make it my mission to find out about him. Session drummers never get their due!

I think Def Leppard's Rick Allen is the best drummer to have lost an arm and come back and still be incredibly good... I also really like the drum work of the guy from System Of A Down but I don't know his name.

I've been invited to play on a drum-kit by my extra-crunchy same-sex oriented downstairs neighbour who has a full kit that she hammers nearly every Wednesday and Friday afternoon after I admitted that I love drums but I respectfully declined. I want to buy my own home and set up a drum kit and teach myself to play or maybe get lessons.
Rick Allen is amazing, but is it because he only has one arm that people say he's a great drummer?
Getting a drum kit for your home would be great. I'm saying this because I'm not your neighbour!

I had a similar experience at school. I wanted piano lessons but they gave me violin lessons instead. I only lasted one lesson with the violin!

I'm not a Led Zeppelin fan but I recognise that John Bonham was a very good drummer.

You seem to like dead drummers. Stephen Morris is still alive!

Like you, I tend to drum along to music I'm listening to. At least it's better than playing an air guitar to the music!

I'm slightly surprised the Beatles stuck with Ringo Starr. I guess he didn't rock the boat and was well liked in the band.
