BOGOTÁ HUMANA

I’ve been beaten to this post by the blogger FunPleasurable, see his blog HNW Cycling post. But I’ve started so I’ll finish.

Bogotá Humana is a top Colombian women’s cycling team, who have hit the news for wearing the outfits pictured above.

The President of the International Cycling Union (UCI ), Brian Cookson, called their outfits “unacceptable by any standards of decency”.

This seems to be a case of double-standards for many reasons. First, male professional cyclists have their bits clearly showing when they race in their outfits - see the bulging Peter Sagan, a top professional cyclist, above.

Second, women’s sport often gets reduced to their bodies and outfits rather than their sporting achievements. Remember Sepp Blatter, the FIFA President, suggesting that female footballers should wear tight-fitting shorts to broaden the appeal of women’s football - that’s soccer to my American friends.

Third, one of the biggest problems with professional cycling is drugs, which became industrial during the Lance Armstrong-era. Now, the UCI is worried about women’s clothing, obviously because the problem of drugs has been sorted!

Fourth, below is the Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos, probably the best ever female cyclist, winning a race and also posing for the camera in a way that men are rarely asked to do.

Similarly, there are photographs of the Olympic gold-medal winning cyclist Victoria Pendleton riding her bike naked - either she wants to or she’s been paid to, what’s the problem! I would post a photo of her, who is much better looking than Marianne Vos, but I don’t want to be accused of objectifying women!

Are the outfits of Bogotá Humana “unacceptable by any standards of decency”?
Do you think women’s sport gets a hard time compared to men’s sport?
Have you ever had a blog post planned only to find another blogger has done it?

The Scotland vote will be announced in about ten hours time. I'm expecting the Scots to vote to stay in the UK.

Are the outfits of Bogotá Humana “unacceptable by any standards of decency”? I don't see a problem, but I think in a public event with children viewing, maybe a bit more modesty is in order

Do you think women’s sport gets a hard time compared to men’s sport? On a professional level, I think is in its infancy, so it will take time to mainstream

Have you ever had a blog post planned only to find another blogger has done it? Yes and the other way around. Not a real problem for me

1. Nope, seems like double standards.
2. No, funnily enough, I think the reverse. For example, why should women tennis players get paid the same as men when they play shorter games? Otherwise, I truly believe sports people are overblown, overpaid, non-contributors.........
3. I've unwittingly done it in reverse. Occasionally when I come across something interesting like this I'll check around a few bloggers to see if they've posted already.

It's difficult to blog about an original idea here.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was man telling the women cyclists to wear their 'naked' outfits.

I once did a blog on sex in a car only to be reprimanded by another blogger, who I didn't follow, for pinching his idea!

I don't think the outfits are "unacceptable by any standard of decency" but there's a bit of a prude in me that thinks they could be slightly more modest. Peter Sagan looks like he has an industrial panty shield sewn into the front of his bike shorts and it looks less obscene than if his gear was simply pushed up against the flimsy fabric.

Women's sport seems to be treated more as a perving opportunity for men than showing women who are dedicated sportspersons who deserve respect for their sporting prowess.

Yes, a few times I have been throwing an idea for a post around in my head and then notice that another blogger has gotten the idea out there first. I'm sure that from time to time it has gone the other way, too. Don't sweat the small stuff. You can post your idea 3 months later when everyone's forgotten the other post and they'll think your idea is pure genius.
It's difficult to block about original things sometimes. And, as you wisely say, it doesn't matter if there's more than one blog about the same thing.

They was designed to create a stir and they achieved that!
Have you ever had a blog post planned only to find another blogger has done it? Yes, but I don't mind because I can easily come up with other ideas! To be copied a form of flattery, in my humble opinion!
The naked cycling outfits certainly did cause a stir, so much so that I've since found a further two bloggers who blogged about it.

When I next go cycling, I'm going to wear the naked woman-look lycra!

I'm sure you're right that there's a bloke behind the decision for the women cyclists to wear their 'naked' outfits.

A g-string outfit for cycling - that could be be very interesting. I'll forward your idea to the Bogota Humana cycling team.
