A GOLD RUSH
A GOLD RUSH There’s a gold rush in the Kentish seaside resort of Folkestone. The German artist Michael Sailstorfer buried £10,000-worth of 24-carat gold bars on a beach as part of Folkestone’s arts festival. Whoever found the gold was allowed to keep it. Hundreds of people flocked to the beach, many with spades and some with metal detectors, to search for the 30 gold bars. The organiser of the arts festival believed that this dig would create a work of art by making sandcastles at the same time as prospecting! I think it would have been hilarious if a few sunbathers camped out on the beach, with wind breaks staking their patches, refused to move as the prospectors dug up the beach! A few days after the gold was buried, three friends were the first prospectors to find a gold bar, worth £500. Recounting the moment they found the gold, one of the friends said: “My legs went from under me and I started shaking. I put it quietly in my pocket. We left the beach and half way home, we pulled over for a drink.” With even greater luck, the three friends found a pub selling beer pulled by penis-shaped bar tap handles with a 24-carat gold-plated finish. You can buy them from Phillip’s Personals, who sell “the finest selection of hand crafted penis hardware, fixtures and fittings” - see photo below! When’s the last time you built a sandcastle on a beach? Have you ever used a metal detector? Do you have much gold in your home? My last sandcastle built on a beach was about 15 years ago in Portugal, I’ve never played with a metal detector, and I have no gold in my home. |

I build sand castles often. I am close to the beach and enjoy digging in the sand. I have never used a metal detector...might be fun on some of our uninhabited islands...Might find Blackbeard's treasure! Not much gold around this house. I am not a fan of gold. I prefer platinum.

You've beaten me; my last sandcastle I built was about ten years ago. I loved it.

Historically, gold seems to be one of the best investments. It's quite amazing when you think about it. Gold prices go up whenever there's a crisis.

If filling one abandoned icecream container with sand and packing it until firm then turning it upside down to create a squarish, semi-domed shaped object made of sand, sitting on top of more sand is creating a sandcastle... It would be at least 35 years ago. I've switched a metal detector on in a shop that sells them and waved it around but never for fossicking. By gold in my home, I'm guessing you mean the precious metal and not the colour... Maybe half a microgram, at most. Burgling me would have to be a revenge act, not an act of acquirement.
