A SUNDAY SERVICE

Above is a topless FEMEN activist. With ‘I AM GOD’ daubed on her breasts (and who's to say she's not!), Josephine Witt stood on Cologne Cathedral’s altar during a Christmas service. Church security officials quickly manhandled her out of the church.

FEMEN is a radical feminist protest group that was first established in Ukraine in 2008. The group is now based in Paris after its Kiev office was closed down by the Ukrainian authorities. The group has a few hundred activist members and about 20,000 supporters worldwide.

The aim of FEMEN, according to its website, is the “Complete victory over patriarchy”. It uses sextremism “to protect women's rights, democracy watchdogs attacking patriarchy, in all its forms: the dictatorship, the church, the sex industry”.

FEMEN's tactics of sextremism have changed from wearing skimpy clothing at the start of the movement’s protests to routinely baring breasts and buttocks, and even defecating in public, nowadays.

Islam, the Roman Catholic Church and political leaders are all regular targets for FEMEN sextremism. Bare-breasted FEMEN avtivists have greeted politicians such as Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconi, who both looked quite happy being ambushed.

Ironically, Facebook initially banned the FEMEN page because it suspected it was pornographic!

I’m all in favour of peaceful protest and, even in certain circumstances, violent protest. But I do wonder whether the tactics of FEMEN are effective - the more naked FEMEN activists protest, the more media coverage they get; but, rather than exposing patriarchy, I wonder whether they are unwittingly promoting women to be seen as sex objects.

Newspapers always print large pictures of topless FEMEN protesters with a few words outlining the nature of their protests. I think their protests perhaps would be more effective if they used more violence and fewer tits!

Would you go naked to change the world?
Have you ever engaged in peaceful or violent protest?
Under what circumstances, if any, would you support violent protest?

My protests have always been peaceful - joining political groupings, going on demonstrations, signing petitions, attending meetings, going on strike, writing letters and e-mails, boycotting certain products, and giving talks.

I don’t think I’ve been that effective in my protest efforts - the whale still hasn’t been saved, the Tories are still in power and Affairlook is still providing shit customer service!

For more on the FEMEN movement, see my blog ARE YOU A SEXTREMIST post. Below is FEMEN’s papal welcome.

FEMEN is having the exact opposite effect as they desire. Every time they engage in their radical uncouth behavior, they are taken less and less seriously and are marginalizing themselves are nut jobs.

This whole nonsense that behaving badly somehow elevates your argument is just insanity and an excuse to be obnoxious.

I would not go naked to change anything except my clothes!

I have been on several Ban the Bomb marches.

There are no circumstances in which I could support violent protest....I don't think violence achieves anything.

With a "base" of approximately 21000 members total, they are so miniscule , they don't have enough representative value to allow them to allegedly represent a world wide majority. Why any form of government would ever listen to them or make accommodation to them is beyond me. What ever happened to popular or majority rule? Letting this type of a group influence policy for the majority who apparently do not support their goals is criminal. I have no doubt they feel strongly about their beliefs and more power to them, but voice it with calm and reason. Resorting to violence or intimidation to change others views is terrorism. One definition of it is; noun: terrorism=" the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims". If they pursue that course of action, they are defacto enemies of free people.

Would you go naked to change the world? No , that is silly

Have you ever engaged in peaceful or violent protest? Peaceful, yes

Under what circumstances, if any, would you support violent protest? I can think of no way I would, it is counter productive and frankly that type of violence is abhorrent to me

But FEMEN are getting media exposure, thus putting their cause higher up the political agenda.
Thanks for stopping by.

I went to a few CND events and demonstrations.
It's interesting to know whether the IRA campaign led (or at least contributed) to the peace agreement in Northern Ireland. Some people think so.

Violent protest is definitely justified if there's an oppressive and tyrannical government.

FEMEN does have a very small support base, but sometimes oak trees grow from acorns.

I believe most forms of peaceful protest have been shown, repeatedly, to be an inadequate tool to change any regime.

Therefore, in principle, I support violent protest. In reality there are few causes I care about deeply enough to support. Violent protests also always seem to target the wrong people.

I would always argue for greater tolerance on the part of both the authorities and the protesters.
Tolerance is unfortunately often in short supply, especially when religion is involved.

The cathedral is huge. Cathedrals in Europe are often massive, particularly in France, Italy and Spain.

These FEMEN seem to be nuts who are just publicity-seeking... All they will achieve is notoriety for offending the prudes who are offended by the site of bare breasts. They will achieve literally nothing politically, far better to go to university, get a degree, join a political party and influence change from within.

Me going naked couldn't change the world, even if I was willing to. Nudity achieves nothing other than overexposure.

I have engaged in rallies that began peacefully until the pigs got heavy handed and manhandled the protesters for not moving-on, it then turned very violent. I despise lowlife politicians who don't respond to the requests of the people when those requests are fair and reasonable and get the pigs to "break-up" a protest. Chickenshit lowlifes is all they'll ever be and they never give a stuff about petitions, they instruct their staff to shread those and continue on being odious scum.

Protest achieves nothing, whether peaceful or violent... What we need are more political assassinations to make them sit up and take notice that if they piss the people off too much, they don't get voted out, they get "offed".
Some police forces in the UK are changing tactics on how they police protest. Research has suggested that if the police facilitate and even encourage protesters to protest, there'll far less violence.

I can fully relate to your argument. Women have had to fight very hard to get rights enjoyed by men and there's still a long way to go. I'm just not sure that the FEMEN way is the most effective way.

....a fervent discussion is what is normally called for...but when governments stop listening to their people..that is usually when strong temperaments force there way in....

there is no reason for anyone to violently demonstrate their views.....Remember Kent State....Remember Vietnam.....Remember our own Civil War.....

I was born in Washington DC...for the past 55 years I have seen some of the strangest and violent outcomes in human history

    Blue....
I think violent protest is sometimes necessary if governments are oppressing their people.
