YE OLDE TRIP TO JERUSALEM

Nottingham is most famous for its links with Robin Hood. There have been more films made of Robin Hood than any other real person, including Jesus Christ. Tourists, having seen the films, get quite disappointed when they see Nottingham Castle because it’s not a real castle; it's a mansion. The original castle was destroyed centuries ago.

First built in 1067 after the Norman Conquest, Nottingham Castle occupied a strategic position as it controlled a key crossing over the River Trent that divides the south and north of England. By the Middle Ages, it was a very significant royal fortress and residence with an adjoining hunting ground.

Nottingham Castle is where the English Civil War kicked off. In 1642, Cromwell’s parliamentarians (roundheads) defeated King Charles I’s troops (cavaliers) in the first battle of the civil war that would last until 1651. The city was on Parliament's side against the monarch; hence Nottingham’s main street is called Parliament Street.

After the execution of King Charles 1 in 1649, the castle was razed to the ground by the Duke of Newcastle, who later built a mansion on the castle’s foundations. In 1831, however, his mansion was destroyed by fire after a riot. The Duke had voted against the Reform Bill to extend the right-to-vote to many men (though not women). In protest, local people burnt down the ducal mansion.

Nottingham City Council later took over the ruined mansion and established a (very boring) art gallery and museum, the first outside London. The Council is now making plans to make the mansion more castle-like.

At the bottom of the sandstone outcrop where the castle stands, there is a pub called Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. Established in 1189, the pub claims to be the oldest pub in England. Several pubs, including two other pubs in Nottingham, also lay claim to this title.

According to local legend, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem pub takes its name from the twelfth century crusades to the Holy Land. It is said that knights joining King Richard I’s crusades stopped off at the pub for a beer before crusading. How times have changed!

Rather than taking visitors to Nottingham Castle, I always take them to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem for a drink and some food. The pub is set within caves and serves a good range of real ale beers. At the pub, I always drink a pint of Olde Trip beer, a refreshing bitter.

If I took you to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, what could I get you to drink?
Do you have a favourite pub or bar?
Where do you take people visiting your home area?

The Mekons released the song, Thee Olde Trip to Jerusalem, on their 2002 Oooh! album.

I only take visitors to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem; normally I drink at pubs and bars even closer to home - see my blog WHERE I LIVE post.

Great pic's and factoids about your home town. I've been there a few times and really enjoyed it, though I have been down for many years.

1. That Mild bitter looks pretty inviting.
2. Not really, there are loads of goodies in Embra.
3. To loads of goodies.

My favourite pub of all time....The Smuggler's Inn in Jersey.

Nottingham doesn't make enough of the Robin Hood legend. There's an airport now called the Robin Hood airport but it's in Doncaster in Yorkshire, which also lays claim to Robin Hood.

I love this post but the title initially put me off. Thank you for a great history lesson and the joy of bringing to mind the escapades of Frankie Howerd's character Lurkakot in the Up The Chastity Belt movie where he travels to the Holy Land to retrieve his master King Richard from the Holy Land after he flees the taking of the castle by Sir Braggart deBombast/e but finds that far from a Holy War, it's somewhat Bacchanalian and there's more carnal, than carnage...

I'd go for two fingers of malt whiskey.

I don't have a favourite pub because I prefer to drink in company I know fairly well, not strangers.

When folks from out of town or overseas come to see me, I like to take them for a tour around the historical "Rocks" area, it's one of the earliest settlements in Australia and has interesting olde shoppes and pubs and restaurants with some of the finest food and drink Sydney has to offer.
I'm intrigued why did the title put you off?
Frankie Howerd was a star!

We have a lot of caves in Nottingham, enough for 20,000 people to shelter during the Blitz. Come and visit!
