TIT JUICE

This is not a post on a woman’s breast milk or even the bird’s favourite tipple. It is about a disease that people working on fishing vessels are liable to get, tit juice conjunctivitis.

Tit juice conjunctivitis is the acute swelling of the eyes caused by the juice of tits (or duffs), which are marine growths that look like suet dumplings with finger-like growths protruding from them. When these tits are caught in fishing nets, they explode and release millions of tiny sharp silicon needles which may go into the eyes.

People working on trawlers are also likely to get are Dogger Bank Itch, an allergic skin condition caused by contact with a curly weed plant found only in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea and near the coasts of Scotland and Norway.

Two other interesting fishing boat-related diseases are Jumbo Wrists, caused by repetitive strain injury from gutting fish, and Haddock Rash, an inflammation between the fingers. There’s also Salt Water Boils, Palmer Space Infections and Pulp Space Infections.

For more details on “diseases of fishermen”, please consult chapter 8 of The Ship Captain’s Medical Guide produced by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It’s a fascinating and illuminating read!

Do you enjoy a bit of fishing?
Have you had tit juice conjunctivitis, Dogger Bank Itch, Jumbo Wrists or Haddock Rash?
Have you suffered from any unusual ailments?

In the words of the comedian Tim Vine (again), “conjunctivitis.com - that’s a site for sore eyes.” Boom! Boom!

I don't like fishing....in my opinion it is down there with watching paint dry as an enjoyable pastime.

No I haven't.

I don't know how unusual it is but I have a factor in my blood that makes me prone to miscarriages and blood clots.

I haven't had unusual illnesses, but some of the regular ones!

Fishing doesn't appeal to me. As a child I used to go fishing but stopped when I caught a fish.

I don't enjoy fishing but have done it and am very anti recreational fishing... Do it for survival, not sport.
I have never had any of those ailments, I'm not sure they exist in australia.
I have Coeliacs Disease but refuse to eat a strictly gluten-free diet. I'm fully aware of the consequences.
I've noticed in supermarkets that the range of gluten-free foods on sale has steadily increased, though it's probably not sufficient to those who are allergic to gluten.

Watching her go fishing would be much more preferable than actually going fishing myself.

Eating fish and chips is also the closest I get to fishing nowadays.

A lot of salmon sold in the UK is now farmed salmon. It doesn't taste as good as wild salmon.

Though I don't like fishing, I will make an exception and go fishing with her!

Owning a dog in this country is often a good way to meet and talk to women in this country. It's probably the only advantage of owning a dog has over having a cat.

I stopped fishing as soon as I caught a fish! I do like eating fish but the fish I caught could not be eaten.

The problem with the gluten-free foods is that the prices are obscene. A 12 slice loaf of gluten-free bread will cost $7 or more whereas a non-gluten-free loaf of bread with 16 slices costs less than $4, unless it's a thick-cut fruit loaf.
Gluten-free frozen pies 4 for $8, $2 pies sound reasonable until you compare the cost of non-gluten-free pies 6 for $5.50 (less than a dollar each). The cost of following a gluten-free diet faithfully is at least a third more than the cost of a standard diet. Often the flavour and texture leaves a great much to be desired too.
The bread has a texture that is a lot like stale cake. Not appetising and the price just adds to the horror.
Thanks for the information, I didn't release gluten-free food cost so much more than other food.
