ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE Motor neurone disease (MND) is progressive and fatal neurological disorder. The neurodegenerative disease eventually stops a person’s nerve cells controlling their muscles. In the UK and Ireland, the disease is called MND. But in the US and elsewhere, it is termed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), though it’s sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous baseball player who died from the disease. MND/ALS leaves people gradually unable to walk, talk, eat and breathe on their own, and then they die. But, people with MND/ALS can still think and feel; their cognitive, emotional and intellectual capacities remain unaffected by the disease. The causes of MND/ALS are unknown, and there is no known cure. Life expectancy for most people with the disease is between two and five years, though it often takes a year to diagnose MND/ALS. In a survey of UK doctors, MND/ALS was the disease most doctors didn’t want to die from. In America, the ALS Association has launched the ice bucket challenge to raise public awareness and money. In the words of the ALS Association: “The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a to the ALS charity of their choice.” The ice bucket challenge has gone viral and millions of dollars (and pounds) are being raised for MND/ALS research etc. Justin Timberlake, Mickey Rourke, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Lil Wayne, Gary Player and Mark Zuckerberg (not above) have all been doused. The US President, Barack Obama, chose to give money instead of getting wet. Famous people who've died of MND/ALS include the actor David Niven, the journalist Jill Tweedie and the football manager Don Revie (who managed one of the greatest club teams ever seen, Leeds United). Probably, the most famous person alive with MND/ALS is Professor Stephen Hawking, the English theoretical physicist. He wrote the 1988 best-selling book, A Brief History of Time, which attempted to unify Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Many people bought the book, a few perhaps read the book, but even fewer understood the book. Stephen Hawking, however, is an exception; he has lived with MND/ALS for over 40 years. Have you accepted or would you accept the ice bucket challenge? What charities do you normally give monies to? My Mum died from MND/ALS. It took a year for her to be diagnosed and she was dead within a year of the diagnosis. An army of professionals entered her life - doctors, neurologists, respiratory physicians, dieticians, occupational therapists, speech therapists, carers, nurses, social workers, and solicitors. On her death bed, she agreed to be my guardian angel, even though I don’t believe in angels. Amethyst that I gave her lies in my Mum’s grave. And I've just posted a tribute on the absurd, "this is a sex site...". |

There's nothing wrong with posting a tribute to your Mum here Spunky.....we are almost all friends here and we all have people we have loved and lost. I reckon MND is the illness I would least like to die from too....all in all, having a working brain trapped in a body that no longer works must be a living hell. When my time comes....I hope God takes me swiftly. I usually give to the three children's hospitals in Dublin. Particularly Temple Street who have cared for all my children at some time or another and where my grandson had his brain surgery almost two years ago now. ~~Anais Nin~~

I'm very sorry that your mum died in such horrible circumstances. *warmhugs2U* I couldn't do the ice-bucket challenge, I get severe migraines from drinking cold water but would give generously to research and treatment. I often give small amounts to homeless individuals in person on the street... I'm fairly good at spotting the genuine cases and sometimes seek them out to give them a few dollars, even if it means that I have to be more careful in my spending for the remainder of the pay period. I also give regular amounts to the Salvation Army because they were very generous to me when I got a massive energy bill a few years ago that I could never have paid, even after being granted a pay by date extension without their help. My service would have been cut off.

A fast death for me as well, or death in my sleep just after a night of sex!

Have you accepted or would you accept the ice bucket challenge? No ice bucket, I have a low pain threshold! What charities do you normally give monies to? Strictly local where I can see what they do with the money!

Stephen Hawking is very much an exception for living so long with MND. My Mum's MND nurse was very keen to stress this to prevent us having false hope. I'd also sooner donate money than take the challenge.

I loved my Mum to bits. I also give talks to local MND support groups.
| ||
|
I give money to animal charities too, but not the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as I think pandas get far too much money!

One of my best friends has MS. Fortunately - or, rather less unfortunately, she has the least progressive type of MS.
| ||
|
I'd also sooner donate money than get soaked with ice cold water.

...I love this..but I would challenge them to a dunk in the Kenai River in Alaska ..if they really want a ice challenge... blue....

I'm also hoping that those who took the challenge also give money, especially as rich celebrities are getting much needed publicity from their stunts.
