NICKNAMED

Above is muktuk, a traditional Inuit dish of frozen whale skin and blubber.

The word 'nickname' is derived from the old English term, 'ekename', meaning an additional name.

In my childhood, my parents often nicknamed me demon.

At school, I was given the nickname of blubber-belly because my friends thought I was fat! I thought my nickname was a little unfair because my fat was only puppy-fat. But the more I protested, the more my nickname stuck.

But my nickname was quickly shortened to dubber-delly, dubber and then dub. I liked this nickname because of its links to the music style of the same name.

My brother, younger but taller, was dubbed Little Dub at school.

Here on this site, my username gets shortened to spunk, spunky, SCF and S. But my official nickname, at least until next year, is Top Cock!

What nicknames have you been given by family, friend and/or work colleagues?
Did you or do you like your nicknames?

Stemming from reggae music in the 1960s, dub music involves instrumental drum-and-bass remixes of songs with lots of delay, echo and reverb, plus occasional vocals, dubbed in.

Passing on the muktuk. I had a nickname as a kid. I hated it. Once I got into the Air Force I stopped answering to it. Pissed my Mother off , but that's one advantage of being a big boy. And nope, I am not sharing it

Like my handle those closest to me simply abbreviate my name, buy using the first 3 letters.

I have had some other notable nicknames two favorite were Chocolate Thunder, and B.A.R. Bar came from an accusation a girl made in university after one of my friends choose to date another girl instead of her. She said my group friends and I just went around playing with peoples hearts (so not me), and accused me of being the ring leader. So my nickname became Bad Ass Ringleader.

It's good to take control of how people name you.

I'll pass on the muktuk, too...

My "family" had unflattering things they used to call me... "Pigshit" was just one of them (it's nice to feel loved)...

At school, I wasn't popular... I came from a dirt-poor, dysfunctional family where the father (a convicted kid abuser) was absent and received derivatives of my birth name and anything that they discovered really upset me stuck for several years. Some had their own "patented" nicknames for me and I was regularly bashed for refusing to answer to them. Same too, with the charming ones from my "family".
School kids can be very cruel. I guess I was lucky with my nickname.

Once a nickname sticks, it's difficult to shed it. My best friend used to call me stinky because I don't use soap on my face. His kids still call me stinky to this day!

That's quite an achievement not to have picked up a nickname since you were a young boy.

It seems your Splinter nickname and my Dub nickname were given to us for the opposite reasons!
