THE GERMANS ARE COMING?
THE GERMANS ARE COMING? Many British tourists abroad accuse Germans tourists of getting up very early in the morning to place their towels on a hotel’s sunbeds by the swimming pool so that no one else can sit on them for the whole day. In 1993, there was a Carling Black Label beer television advert showing, to the tune of the Dam Busters March, a British tourist expertly throwing his towel onto a sunbed to beat the German tourists to claiming the first sunbed. Research has even been undertaken why the German get the sunbeds first. Professor Russell Foster, a University of Oxford neuroscientist, examined the sleeping habits of more than 10,000 people from Britain and Germany. The professor found that the Germans sleep slightly less and get up earlier than the Brits, which explains why they get to the sunbeds first when abroad. But, recently the popular German newspaper, the Bild, carried out an investigation of who grabs the sunbeds first at the resort of Lloret de Mar on Spain’s Costa Brava. The newspaper found that British tourists were the first to towel-claim the sunbeds. The Bild newspaper found that the sunbeds were free of towels at 7.36am, but by 9.21am most of the sunbeds were claimed by British tourists - see the photos above and below. The newspaper headlined: “Photo evidence in the war of the towels. The English are the worst lounger squatters!” Despite this photographic evidence, one British tourist insisted to the Bild newspaper, “It was the French.” The Bild newspaper also described British tourists abroad as suffering from “underwear amnesia”, “vodka cough” and “Welsh wandering hands”. Brits abroad, it seems, don’t have a good reputation. If staying at a hotel, do you ever get up early to place towels on sunbeds to claim them for the day? What’s your view of Brits abroad? How are your country’s tourists viewed when holidaying abroad? |

LOL...I always had my own sunshine resort with no need to claim a sunbed. My brother has a pool. I think the Irish are generally welcomed wherever they go. ~~Anais Nin~~

1. Never, sunbathing, and particularly around a crowded pool, is not my idea of relaxing. 2. Some less open-minded brits can be rude, I find that embarrassing. 3. The reception if I say I'm british is nowhere nearly as warm as when I say I'm scottish, but it really depends where you go.

I take that attitude. The only thing that gets me up when I'm on holiday is the thought of missing breakfast if I don't get out of bed!

The biggest international incident I witnessed was when someone pee-ed in the swimming pool. People were blaming nationalities. I just blamed all kids!

I've never stayed at a hotel when travelling, only privately rented digs or friend's homes. Travelling is generally more affordable that way. Using towels to claim sunbeds should be outlawed by the hotels. To be fair, I haven't experienced many Brits abroad but apart from their "let's find a pub" catchcry, they generally seem quite affable. Apparently, aussie tourists abroad are a pissed-up, self-important lot who ignore the customs of the overseas locales they visit. From what I've heard, the French can't stand Aussies in France but when the French come downunder, they claim to adore us. Go figure!

What gets me most is the refusal to speak any words other than in the English language. It's not difficult to learn a few words and phrases, such as thanks, please, coffee, beer, yes, no, hello, goodbye and even 'do you speak English?'.

In law, it's perfectly legal to remove a towel from a sunbed if not used.

It's quite legal to remove a towel from a sunbed if not used, but it may cause an incident (and even an international incident)!

I don't usually go to the "pools" when traveling! I have been to Germany, and been told they love Canadian people. Even while camping lately, I had US neighbors and they said Canada and its people are very friendly!
