TOP TIPS
TOP TIPS Here in the UK, I regularly give a 10 per cent tip to waiters and waitresses, taxi drivers and hairdressers unless the service is bad. Strippers and golf caddies also get tipped here, so I've been told. While abroad, I usually also tip hotel porters, hotel chambermaids, bar staff, toilet attendants and guides. A recent TripAdvisor survey found that Americans and Germans were the best tippers, and that Italians and French were the worst tippers. Tipping customs– who you tip, what you tip and how you tip - vary widely across the world. North America is where people tip the most - a 15-20 per cent tip is often seen as obligatory. On my first night in New York, I was reprimanded by a barman for only tipping 10 per cent for serving two beers! Tipping in Europe is less widespread and generous than in North America. In Scandinavian countries, tipping is not a custom. In other European countries (eg Germany, Netherlands), rounding-up the bill to include a 5-10 per cent tip is common. In some European countries (eg France, Italy), many restaurants often add a service charge to the bill, though a small tip is left if the service is very good. In Japan and China (not Hong Kong), there is no tipping tradition and a tip may even be regarded as an insult. In Australia, a ten per cent tip is increasingly the norm at restaurants for good service; but in New Zealand, tipping is not yet the norm. In parts of Africa, tipping is a necessity just to get by. When I visited Zimbabwe, I had to tip almost anyone. I had to tip airport security officials for the pleasure of searching my suitcase and I had to tip a group of teenagers for looking after my parked car! Tipping is sometimes a form of bribery; it’s called dash in Zimbabwe. If I didn’t tip the airport staff, I would have been detained so long that I’d miss my flight. And if I hadn’t tipped the youngsters, my car wouldn’t have been roadworthy on my return. My ‘tips’ for making my flight and having a car to drive was very good value-for-money to me at the time. Dash helps poor people also get by. Who do you tip and how much do you tip? Do you tip more when you are abroad? Have you ever paid a bribe to someone? Tips gratefully received! |

I tip anyone in the service industry usually about 10-15% and I always give it to the staff concerned personally in cash. I don't travel much so I have little experience of other countries. ~~Anais Nin~~

When my children were younger, to teach them the value of service, we would discuss what should be tipped to our wait staff. Sometimes, if the wait staff were very friendly, we would include them in the discussion. This has made my children realize the cost of doing business and the cost of being friendly. The staff that have joined our conversations were always very helpful and never insinuated their person plights. Instead they would answer questions and give valuable input. My children and I, most often tip 15-20% unless they are exceptional or horrible.

I have only ever tipped (monetarily, never the other way) on very rare occasions. In Australia tipping isn't customary and due to the level of wages, generally considered unnecessary. I have tipped taxi drivers for assistance with heavy bags or good wait staff in the classier restaurants that I very rarely visit and I used to regularly tip a favourite barman at one of my favourite pubs, he was good looking, extra polite and often served me doubles for the price of a single... I've never been abroad or a broad... If someone tries to bribe me, they're out of luck... I won't pay (or a ransom for that matter).

I take your word that tipping is not the norm in Australia. I had just read an article in a travel magazine saying that tipping has become more common in Australian restaurants.
