INTERNATIONAL BEER DAY

Today is International Beer Day. It always falls on the first Friday in August every year. In 2007, the first International Beer Day was celebrated in Santa Cruz in California. The day is now celebrated worldwide; for some reason bars promote this day!

Here is some beer trivia:
1. Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty beer glass.
2. One of the moon’s craters is called Beer.
3. Workers building the Great Pyramid of Giza were paid with a daily ration of beer.
4. In the Middle Ages, more beer than water was drunk because it was safer.
5. Snake Venom, a Scottish beer, is the world’s strongest beer; it contains 67.5% alcohol and costs £50 a bottle.
6. Zythology is the study of beer and brewing.
7. Plato said, “He was a wise man who invented beer.”
8. At any given time, 0.7 per cent of the world’s population is drunk; about 50 million people are drunk right now.

Do you like beer? If so, what are your favourite beers?
How many beers can you drink before getting too drunk?

I drink beer; four or five pints is probably my maximum limit otherwise I get very friendly with the toilet attendant.

My favourite beers are San Miguel (Spanish), Heineken (Dutch), Kronenbourg (French), Staropramen (Czech) and Stella Artois (Belgian). A lot of good beers are brewed in Belgium, including the strong Leffe beers that were originally brewed by monks.

When younger, after weaning myself from Carling Black Label and Skol, I drank drink bitter but I now prefer lager. I don’t like drinking white (wheat) beers, fruit beers or Guinness (unless served in Ireland).

Also, I don’t drink Mexican beer with a slice of lime stuffed in the bottle - they don’t drink beer like this in Mexico but British bars often serve Corona or Sol beers with a lime stuffed in the bottle for that authentic touch!

I am a beer guy. Although slowed down tremendously . I used to drink on the weekends, maybe 10-15 total. Now maybe 6 a year!! But when I do, none of that silly beer or fruit in it. An ice cold lager is the way to go. And Carlings, what memories that has

I love beer but have cut down on it recently. My favorites are ales, particularly IPAs. We have some good microbreweries in San Diego, especially Stone Brewery.

Belgian beer is the best and strong! Clearly the Belgian monks weren't so other-wordly.

Carling beer is still widely served in the UK.

Locally brewed beers are often the best beers to drink.

I like fresh brown beer best. They are usually bitters but not always. Getting local beer is nearly always better than beer which has travelled.

Lager, by definition, is beer made for travelling. I'll drink it and enjoy it but even Lager is best when it's local. I really enjoyed Bruge in Belgium. It's possible to get really very drunk and never repeat a beer type.
I've not yet been to Bruges. I've been to Brussels many times and Leuven where Stella Artois is brewed.

I don't know why, and I do keep trying, but I just can't get into cider. There's one cider called Thatchers that I'd refuse to drink just because of its association with a former dead Prime Minister!

I like drinking IPA. I too have cut down my beer consumption, though I have also increased my wine consumption!

There's lot of Australian beers served in the UK.

......I love Heineken..........and I live in the city that started the local brew craze in the United States......

    Blue..
The Heineken brewed in Amsterdam is a bit better than that served up here, but it's still all very drinkable.

Belgian beers are indeed the best. And Belgian chocolate and frites are good too.
