DRIVERLESS CARS
DRIVERLESS CARS Yesterday on the news, there was a story about driverless cars. The British government announced that driverless or self-driving cars will be allowed on public roads for testing purposes from January next year. Google has developed technology for autonomous cars - above is a photo of the Google Self-Driving Car. In April 2014, the company announced that its cars have logged nearly 700,000 miles on the road. In May, Google launched a prototype of a fully autonomous car, which has no steering wheel, accelerator or brakes. The US has the most advanced plans for self-driving cars to be on the road. To my knowledge, Nevada, Florida, California, Texas and Michigan have approved or about to approve the testing of self-driving cars on their roads. As well as Britain, other countries testing driverless cars include China, Germany, Finland, Japan, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands. Many car manufacturers are testing autonomous cars, including Audi, BMW, General Motors, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volvo. Key issues about self-driving cars include road safety concerns and the high cost of the cars. Other issues are whether the car should have a steering wheel and pedals to be driven manually if need be, and whether a human being has to be in the car while on the road. The FBI, predictably, has warned that driverless cars could be used as lethal weapons. Have you taken a ride in a self-driving car? If not, would you take a ride in a self-driving car? Do you think self-driving cars should be allowed on the road? |

"Self Driving Cars" may be the safest thing since sliced bread; but the will soon put us 'professional drivers' out of work. Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

1. No. 2. Yes. 3. Yes, no great problem for me. Though as McFurbie notes, cabbies may ultimately become redundant, which is a problem. I think Heathrow Airport has had driverless shuttles for a few years now, including subway trains to gates, and individual shuttles.

MB and I have spent a good amount of time discussing this. It will be interesting to see where this goes. We have drone's to do the looking and watching now, so why not cars that do the driving.

I agree with "pal" ....much more research needs to be done!!

I have never been in one, but I did see one, living here in California where there are lots of electric cars too. I LOVE driving, so I would want the option to be able to drive it, but I would love that it can get me anywhere reliably. And think of the productivity! You really could work in your car and texting would be safe. But what I really think about (after all, here on this site) is sex in a driverless car! I'd give up driving for that.

Like everything else, it can be a good thing if done well, but since there is money involved it won't. It's said is difficult to server 2 masters... profit and safety are diametrically opposed, I think. Find pleasure in giving pleasure

At present my answer to all three questions would be NO. I'm not quite sure of the point of this....surely most people who own cars actually LIKE driving? ~~Anais Nin~~

Good point. If it's deemed foolproof, there'd be no good reason why a 6 year old couldn't ride in a self-driving car.

That's one of my concerns as well. Technology is great until it goes wring and it's always when and not if!

The rich always get to use the latest technology first, except for perhaps electronic tagging technology designed by the rich for the poor to enjoy!

I agree with you all. Never mind being in a self-driving car, I wouldn't want to be near a road with driverless cars as things stand now.

No Yes Yes It's hardly a surprise that the FBI has warned about the dangers. It might be the risk would make it necessary to insist on passengers always being present. Either that or they need to make even smarter drones... Ultimately, driverless vehicles would all obey the speed limit so any idea of performance disappears. The next step would be to remove private ownership and replace with state authorised hire vehicles available on demand. Those would be safer and less likely to be able to be turned into bombs.
