A LATENT HOMOSEXUAL?   Latent homosexuality is an erotic inclination towards people of the same sex that is not consciously experienced or expressed. First termed by Sigmund Freud, latent homosexuality is repressed, suppressed, unrecognised and/or not acted upon. There is a theory of homophobia based on latent homosexuality. Researchers from the University of Georgia published their research findings on latent homosexuality and homophobia - see Adams H E, Wright Jr, L W & Lohr B A (1996) Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal? Journal of Abnormal Psychology 105(3) pp440-445. They conducted an experiment on 64 homosexual men, 35 of whom exhibited homophobic traits and 29 did not. The experiment involved penile plethysmography, which is the estimation of blood flow to the penis by measuring the circumference of their penis. In psychology, it’s a common way of measuring male sexual arousal. Both the homophobic and non-homophobic groups were shown the same three types of pornography - heterosexual, lesbian and gay porn. The researchers found that there was no difference in sexual arousal between the two groups when shown heterosexual and lesbian porn. However, when the two groups were shown gay porn, 24 per cent of non-homophobic men displayed signs of sexual arousal but 54 per cent of homophobic men showed signs of sexual arousal. Three explanations have been put forward to explain their findings. The first (environmental) explanation is that homophobic men haven’t been exposed to homosexuality or have been exposed to homophobia in their upbringing. A second (physiological) explanation, based on the finding that anxiety sometimes enhances sexual arousal, is that the homophobic men were anxious watching porn and thus got a hard-on. The third and most intriguing (psychoanalytical) explanation is that men conceal their homosexuality by being homophobic. Thus, more homophobic men will get an erection watching gay porn than non-homophobic men. In his book Natural Selection and Social Theory, Rutgers University’s Professor Robert Trivers argued that the more antagonistic a man is towards homosexuality, the greater extent of his latent homosexuality. As a man who's tried to expand his sexuality and acceptance of all, I've played there. So far I haven't ever been aroused - gotten hard - from direct homosexual experience or porn. I have overcome my own homophobia this way however. No they don't arouse me personally....I love the male form but these photos do nothing for me. I have rarely encountered homophobia in my life....not that I have led a sheltered life but I guess I instinctively avoid narrow minded people...or ignore them if I have to. I found the images of real people sexy but the TOF one has unnatural proportions that I find tasteless and not the least bit arousing. I perceive homophobia as a disease of the mind and try my best to ignore it.
