TUESDAY TITBITS  Prompted by grayblue1’s blog [post 3449873] calling for more tits on Tuesday, here is my small contribution. Today I’ve found out that, on 19 June 1964, the go-go dancer Carol Doda was the first woman to dance topless for money at San Francisco’s Condor Club. This surprised me as I would have thought someone would have been paid to dance topless well before the 1960s. I presumed there were naked dancers in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, but I guess they weren’t paid. Carol Doda danced topless to music played by a band led by Bobby Freeman, who is best known for the 1958 and much-covered hit song Do You Want To Dance?, which has since been much covered - remember Ramones' Do You Wanna Dance?. One of Carol Doda’s favourite songs to dance to, while pretending to swim on stage, was Bobby Freeman’s 1964 hit song C’mon and Swim. Carol Doda’s act was an immediate success and topless dancing quickly spread through San Francisco and the rest of America. Later, on 3 September 1969, Carol Doda started dancing bottomless until a 1972 legal ruling banning naked dancing in establishments that served alcohol. As her star rose, Carol Doda had her breasts enhanced from size 34 to 44 through silicone injections at a cost of $1,500. She stopped stripping in the 1980s, though she continued to perform fully clothed in several San Francisco clubs until quite recently. Have you ever danced topless, or danced with someone topless, in a public place? Do you think Carol Doda was the first paid female topless dancer? Have you heard of Carol Doda or Bobby Freeman? I’ve also found out today that Americans and Canadians normally don’t use the word ‘titbit’ to mean a small piece of tasty food or a little bit of something pleasurable. Instead, they use the word ‘tidbit’.  |

I can't believe that 1964 is the date of the first paid topless dance. I suspect it might have been the first paid topless dance at the Condor Club. Carol Doda was defintely the first topless dancer in America. When they say the first they mean the first recorded, that important get-out clause!
