A SWINGING SUSPICION
A SWINGING SUSPICION I love words. I’m regularly rummaging around in a dictionary. Here are eight not-so-common words: 1. Wüstlingsmutmaßung (German) - the sneaking suspicion that a couple swing 2. Mamihlapinatapei (Yagan, an indigenous South American language) - the wordless but meaningful look shared by two people who both desire to initiate something but are both reluctant to start things 3. Jayus (Indonesian) - a joke so badly told and unfunny that one cannot help but laugh 4. Litost (Czech) - a feeling of misery caused by realising you’re miserable 5. Tartle (Scottish) - the act of hesitating when introducing someone because you’ve forgotten their name 6. Cafuné (Brazilian Portuguese) - the act of tenderly running one’s fingers through someone’s hair 7. Schadenfreude (German) - the feeling of pleasure from seeing the misfortunes of others 8. Gongoozling (English) - watching what happens on canals and, more generally, observing things idly without getting involved Have you ever sensed Wüstlingsmutmaßung? Do you do Schadenfreude? Are you a gongoozler? What are your favourite words? I enjoy a bit of Schadenfreude if I don’t like people and they don’t get hurt! I’ve also enjoyed a bit of gongoozling, especially on the Shropshire Union canal. There’s also a lot of gongoozling on this site. One of my favourite words is nescience, meaning ignorance. When you say it to someone, particularly if said in a French accent, it’s often taken as a compliment until that person goes to the dictionary. PS. There are more canals in Britain’s second city, Birmingham, than there are in Venice. But a Brumetto will never out-sell a Cornetto! |
