SHIRAKO ANYBODY?

Milt is the seminal fluid of fish, molluscs and other water-dwelling animals that reproduce by spraying this sperm-containing goo onto fish eggs (known as roe).

Milt is also eaten in many countries across the world.

Herring milt (moloka) is a popular pickled dish in Russia. Served fried, carp milt (lactes) is a widely eaten Romanian dish. In Sicily, tuna milt (lattume) is widely used as a pizza topping.

In Japan, milt is a key ingredient in several sushi dishes. Shirako is cod milt - see above photo.

On making shirako, the Michelin-starred sushi chef Shinji Kanesaka, whose restaurant is part of Singapore's Raffles Hotel, said:
“I was a little apprehensive about trying the next dish after discovering it to be cod sperm, known as shirako (‘white ’), in Japanese. Similar in appearance to intestines, the poached milt turned out not as offensive on the palate as I had imagined. It tasted a lot like sweetbreads”.

Widely regarded as a delicacy, milt from pufferfish, salmon, squid and anglerfish - see photo below - is also widely eaten in Japan.

Have you eaten milt? If so, what was it like?
If not, would you eat milt?
Do you like sushi food?

I could not eat milt ... because I don’t want babies!

One word....YUCK!!!

I rarely eat fish....don't like it and am allergic to shellfish. I wouldn't touch sushi for anything.

No to your first two questions....
I like a few "sashimi" dishes and eat most "sushi". Here is the difference between the two:
Sushi is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice ( sushi-meshi?) combined with other ingredients (neta?), seafood, vegetables and sometimes tropical fruits. Ingredients and forms of sushi presentation vary widely, but the ingredient which all sushi have in common is rice (also referred to as shari ) or sumeshi.

Sushi can be prepared with either brown or white rice. Sushi is often prepared with raw seafood, but some common varieties of sushi use cooked ingredients. Raw fish (or occasionally meat) sliced and served without rice is called sashimi.

Sushi is often served with shredded ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce. Popular garnishes are often made using daikon.

I love fish, if filleted, but not raw fish. I haven't knowingly tried sushi food, and I definitely wouldn't eat shirako!

Thanks for the explanation of sashimi and sushi food. I've never tried sushi or sashimi food. I would try it though I think I would prefer my fish and meat cooked.
I wouldn't eat shirako unless I was dying from starvation!

No, no and absolutely not... There are too many health risks from eating such "foods".
Eating shirako, I think, would make me retch.

For me, it may look yummy but I wouldn't want to eat shirako to see if it was yummy!

Quite true. When I was in Hong Kong I deliberately never asked what was in my food that my hosts served me. I just quickly ate it and then downed a beer.

I've had a couple of rollmops; they were okay but didn't go back for more.
Hope you had a great holiday.

It does look like gross goo. There's something fishy about shirako!
