AN IRONIC FOURTH OF JULY
AN IRONIC FOURTH OF JULY Above is Lindsay Marie’s Patriotic American Flag painting, though it looks more French than American to me! Without irony, I want to wish a Happy Fourth of July to all my American friends. The US Declaration of Independence was signed on 4 July 1776 announcing to the world that the American colonies, in renouncing British colonial rule, regarded themselves as a new sovereign country, the United States of America. The declaration of independence wasn’t immediately accepted by Britain and the American war for independence lasted a further five years until the British, after the Battle of Yorktown, surrendered to the Americans on 19 October 1781. Just think what may have happened if the Americans didn’t declare and achieve independence; Britain would surely have won this year’s World Cup with Tim Howard in goals! George Bernard Shaw once said, “England and America are two countries separated by a common language.” Another common observation made about America is that Americans, unlike the British, don’t do irony. An American linguist compared the use of irony in the way the British and Americans speak. She found that Americans do irony, but what they regard as irony is what the British generally regard as sarcasm. She found that the American meaning of irony tends to stress “negativity and saying the opposite of what is meant”, whereas the British “seem to have a far broader definition, which includes humorous exchange, clever wordplay and affectionate insults or criticisms of others”. The linguist suggested that it’s the British who say that Americans don’t get irony, perhaps as an expression of arrogance in their sense of humour. What does irony mean to you? Do you do irony or sarcasm? How would you describe the American sense of humour? As an English person, I’ve struggled with irony and it took an Irish friend to teach me about the art of irony. I now understand irony as sarcasm but without the tone, so it’s sometimes more difficult to tell that someone means the opposite to what they say. I like irony but I don’t like sarcasm, especially teenage sarcasm. Perhaps the British thought the American Declaration of Independence was an ironic statement and so ignored it! Please see the blog post, INDEPENDENCE DAY, for ten bits of American trivia. Hillary Clinton is in Britain at the moment, allegedly to launch her book. Perhaps she can squeeze in a little fundraising in between her book-signing engagements, to help launch her hopeful presidential campaign. |
