WORLD CUP MEMES

A meme, according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, is “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture”. The term was coined by the anti-God biologist Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene. For Dawkins, a meme is a unit of culture, the cultural equivalent of the biological gene.

I always thought memes were people who always think of themselves!

It’s now, as Alex Ferguson would say, ‘squeaky bum time’ in the World Cup. There are only eight teams left in the World Cup - Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Germany and Netherlands.

The Americans put up a determined display against the Belgians and narrowly lost. But the American goalkeeper Tim Howard made 16 saves in the game, a record in a World Cup finals game - see above. The memes are now flying for Tim Howard - see below.

So far, the biggest shocks are Costa Rica are still in the World Cup and Spain are out. But I think Colombia can pull off a bigger shock by beating Brazil tomorrow.

If not Tim Howard, who should be the next US President?
What are the biggest shocks so far in the World Cup?

The blog THE BEAUTIFUL GAME post invited people to predict the four semi-finalists, the winners and the top scorer. Here is an update on the World Cup predictions contest, stating remaining predictions for semi-finals (SF), the winner (W) and top scorer (TS):

[blog azriel1970] SF: Brazil, Germany/W: Germany
AmeliaCox SF: SF: Brazil, Germany/W: Germany
JUICY_MELON SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany/W: Argentina or Brazil/TS: Neymar
khuXBFXM8u SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany/W: Brazil/TS: Messi
lindoboy100 SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany/W: Argentina or Brazil/TS: Neymar
[blog LisaLipgloss] SF: Argentina, Belgium
[blog PassionCork] SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany/TS: Messi
sexysixties2 SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany
spunkycumfun SF: Argentina, Brazil, Germany
sweet_VM SF: Brazil, Germany/W: Germany

Given that my initial predictions were illustrative only and that Uruguay’s Luis Suarez has singlehandedly ruined my predictions, I would like to change my predictions to Argentina, Colombia, Germany and Netherlands for the semi-finals, Colombia to win and James Rodríguez to top-score. Only joking!

It looks as if JUICY_MELON, khuXBFXM8u or lindoboy100, with five remaining predictions each, is going to win the predictions contest and claim that special prize!

1. Yep, I'm with McCorker there, McDoe it is!
2. Spain, Suarez, Italy, and the fact that the games have all been so exciting up until now. They're vaunting it as the best ever...............

I'd love Colombia to win, at the very least for their cracking wee salsa shimmy, Cali style, but I reckon it's Argie or Brasil.

Anyone with half a brain would make a better President.

Biggest surprise for me was Spain's poor performance.

Unfortunately Colombia crashed out; they didn't really bring their game to Brazil.
Yes ... McDoe for President!

The quarter final games were cagier affairs than previous games. Your Brazil or Argentina call is looking good.

It was very sad when Andres Escobar got shot. I think Colombia has changed a little since then.

Spain were surprisingly poor, but I think they'll bounce back.

There's only four games left; it'll be all over by next Sunday.

The numbers refer to each save that Tim Howard made in the game - 7 in the first half and 9 in the second half.
