WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE FOR US?

Italy lose to Costa Rica, who don’t even have an army, and Ingerland are now out of the World Cup. At least, England went out of the World Cup after Spain but it’s still England’s worst World Cup finals since 1958 when the Yanks beat us!

The World Cup has been, so far, a brilliant tournament with lots of goals and shocks. England going out is not a shock; Spain going out is a shock.

The Latin American teams are giving the European teams a whipping so far, though the Netherlands have just beaten Chile as I write this post. The French have not been tested yet.

The highlights have been Robin van Persie’s headed goal against Spain when the Netherlands just clinically dismantled the World Cup holders, Costa Rica’s fearless football, Tim Cahill's stunning volley for the Aussies against the Dutch, Ghana’s draw against the Germans and, of course, the Americans nearly beating Ronaldo’s Portugal.

The lowlights have been Fred’s dive to win Brazil a penalty against Croatia, Alan Shearer’s analysis on BBC, and ITV’s decision to recruit the legendary and handsome Fabio Cannavaro as a pundit when his English is not quite good enough to make any perceptive comment.

I’ve watched about three-quarters of the games so far. In many ways, it’s good that England are out because I now can concentrate on the football without hope. For a sports fan, it’s the hope that kills you!

Have you been enjoying the World Cup?
What have been your highlights and lowlights of the tournament so far?
What do you think, if anything, of England crashing out of the World Cup?

I've watched a fair bit of it but not the late matches if I was up early the next day Dare I say it but my favourite part was Netherlands beating Spain....they just took them to pieces.

I was sad that England didn't get past the first round but I really didn't think they were up to it.

Costa Rica.....getting rather fond of them.

I've been watching at least 4 games a day. There have been a lot of "header" goals which I love to see. The next game (about to start) is Cameroon verses Brazil...I'll pick Brazil but anything can happen!

We don't have a favorite team, so the wife and I cheer for whoever has the ball at the moment...cheering for every goal scored by every team.

I did enjoy watching USA vs Portugal. Until the end! That last second shot was the low-light for me. Who decided to add that last extra minute anyway?

I heard that the Americans often don't do well because we're not "floppers". lol

It's actually caught on over here this year. I think that's only because we seem to have a chance. As soon as we're out I think the fever will go away. I don't even know all the rules!

I think we have different rules here, at least at the college level. Teams don't tie so much as there will be a "shootout" if the game is tied at the end. We Americans don't care for ties. We like to WIN!

One of the highlights for me is learning about the new ball. I find it to be quite fascinating. I'm such a nerd. lol

The joy of sport is the unwritten drama unfolding in front of you, so I have been watching the games.

Highlight - the Dutch

Lowlight - the commentary of Clarke Carlisle. He's supposed to be clever, but he isn't, and he offers nothing as a footballer because he was crap at that too

I have enjoyed the world cup in bits and pieces. I did manage to catch almost the entire Spain vs. Netherlands game. The Robin van Persie goal was very special.

Find pleasure in giving pleasure

Overall I haven't enjoyed the World Cup this time around.

My highlights have been the performance of Germany's Thomas Müller and my lowlights have been Spain's poor performance, the gorgeous Iker Cassillas is not at the height of his confidence or abilities anymore and Tim Cahill's attacks on the corner post whenever he scores a goal... What an embarrassing display of immature behaviour!

I'm saddened by England crashing out, I was hoping they would get to the finals round.
Take away Tim Cahill's celebrations, his goal was superb. If a Brazilian had scored the goal, everybody would be raving more about it.

There have been a few good games this time round. The games should get better now the World Cup is in the knockout stages.

Netherlands/Spain has been my favourite game so far.
Costa Rica are playing fearless football.
Todays's games between Brazil and Chile and between Colombia and Suarez-less Uruguay should be good.

Today Brazil will play Chile. It could be a very tough game for the tournament favourites, especially if Chile score first and the Brazilians turn against their team.

The new ball is proving to be very popular with the players, unlike the ball used at the last World Cup in South Africa that swerved all over the place making fools out of goalkeepers.
I enjoy seeing a good draw, even if it's 0-0.

The drama of World Cups can be gripping.
Phil Neville is proving to be quite a bland and useless match analyst.

I am surprized Belgium is doing so well and the UK has been knocked out!
Belgium have some very good players right throughout their team, such as Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard.

The Robin van Persie goal was memorable, one of the best goals ever scored at the World Cup finals.

I think the authorities should come down much harder on what they call simulation but what is really cheating. It seems to be more prevalent in football than in other sports.
