AGE IS NOT JUST A NUMBER

This letter was recently submitted to The Times’ relationship counsellor:
“Q: I recently started going out with someone I met on a dating website. All has gone brilliantly – we have been seeing each other for a few months – but I discovered that his age is four years older than he said on his profile. Now that we are calling ourselves a couple, it worries me. Does everyone lie about their age online? How seriously should I take this?”

She found out his real age after looking at his passport that he left lying around. After reading her letter, I thought there was perhaps a minor but not a major problem because four years doesn’t constitute a gross misrepresentation of the truth.

However, the advice columnist sided with the woman and answered:
“A: Online dating has forced us into a battle of brinkmanship as to how far each person is prepared to push their campaign of untruth. Does it matter? Yes, of course it does. Age is a guide to health, wisdom, vitality, salary, virility and compatibility. That is why profiles ask for it in the first place.”

After reading the answer, I changed my mind. For whatever reason, the man deliberately misled her about his age. He possibly knew that taking four years off his age, he could get away with it. I think he was foolish to do this, because the truth often comes out in these situations.

Strictly speaking, I have lied about my age on my profile. I have added a month to my age. I change the month of my birthday as a way of disguising my identity. But I have strong suspicions that I’ve met a few people on this site who’ve lied big-time about their age. It didn’t bother me because the meets were not dates but possibilities of having sex.

Do you think online dating makes it easier for people to lie about themselves?
How important is it know someone’s age before you date or have sex with them?
How much younger and how much older can someone be before you will have sex with or date them?

My parents, particularly my mother, always drummed it into me never to ask someone their age (or their income, politics and religion). I often talk about politics and religion, though I don’t usually ask people how old they are or how much they earn (well, at least on the first date).

Generally, though it’s not a strict rule, I tend to see ten years younger or older than me as my target age group for dating. For having sex, I have no rules provided it’s legal!

I think there is no excuse for lying about your age. Your birthday, not year is acceptable. It shows disrespect, if not contempt, for the persons you lied to as well as disrespect for the person you are.

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

I always behave. Preferably not well.

I guess if a person wants to be deceitful, the internet does facilitate that. For what purpose I can never understand.

My only concern about age of someone I meet is that they be of legal age, over 21 is my guide. Upper end no limit.

Two of my FWBs are about 7-8 years younger than me. And 2 others 20 plus years younger. I really would like to meet someone closer to my age, but this is what it is for now.

Legal yes that is a must. if its for sex it is all down to attitude.
If its for dating I have to be able to have a conversation with them and be able to laugh. So no I dont see age so much
And I have lied about my age on my profile but I have also confessed to that and will always tell someone the truth if asked.
but then I am not looking for a partner so not too worried about it

If you lie you always get caught in the end some how.. If your over 50 just say so.. Don't send me a pic of someone 40 and then appear to be 55... Holly crap.. do we look stupid.. I have heard stories when guys meet up with girls and they are nothing like their photos..

Do you think online dating makes it easier for people to lie about themselves? sure does.. Get them on cam before meeting..

How important is it know someone’s age before you date or have sex with them? some what

How much younger and how much older can someone be before you will have sex with or date them? Age is just a number .. I like my men in my age range or older..

If she can look good in stockings.. take her! hugs V

Honesty is very important to me so if I thought that a man had lied about his gae I'd be wondering what else he would lie about.

My age and birthday are correct on my profile and like you I generally prefer people of similar age to me give or take 10 years max I suppose.

I don't lie about my age, what's the point. If someone is going to put me in a box and jump to conclusions because of my chronological age we will not get on well anyway.

If the other person is an adult, I will talk to anyone who will talk to me, and just take it from there. My X wife was 8 years younger, the woman I dated before her was 11 years older.

I think online dating encourages people to lie about themselves.

For me, I feel very disgusted if someone has been less than completely honest about themselves. I do not appreciate discovering that the 45 year old I was enjoying sexy times with was actually 55. If a person is 55, pretending to be younger is just dishonest trickery. Find those who actually want sex with a 55 year old. Everything on my profile is 100 percent true and accurate as I don't see the point of deception other than betraying the trust of others. It's fucked-up!

I wouldn't have sex with anyone I wouldn't date and wouldn't date anyone that I wouldn't have sex with. Guys who contact me by profile surfing had better be under 40... Guys who I meet in blogland who I find a mutual affection for/with, can be up to 7 years older than me and any guy who is under that age but over 19years of age and is willing to comply with my requirements, has a fairly good chance if reasonably attractive.
I think online makes it easy for people to lie, but more difficult to keep the pretence going if offline.

I agee with you that there may be no excuse, but there may be reasons why people don't reveal their age. There are a few bloggers on this site say they are 100 years old. I guess they're not trying to deceive anyone.

As I've got older, age matters less.

Being able to have a conversation with someone is essential, and having a laugh with someone is a bonus.

An offline meet will often catch out the online lies.

It's a good idea to cam someone before meeting them.

I've dated women much younger and much older than me. As you rightly say, chronological age is not everything in relationships.
