SEX IN THE BOARDROOM
SEX IN THE BOARDROOM Above is a meeting at this month’s Global Summit of Women held in Paris. Sometimes the solution is the problem! The Corporate Women Directors International (CWDI ) organises these annual summit meetings to help advance women in business. Its research has found that women are significantly less represented than men in company boardrooms, but some countries do far better than others. The CWDI would like quotas to be introduced to ensure a fairer representation of women in business. The CWDI surveyed 57 countries to find the percentage of women company directors. Below are the percentage shares of selected countries, plus the countries’ ranking. 1. Norway - 40.5% 2. France - 28% 3. Latvia - 28% 4. Sweden - 26% 9. UK - 18.7% 12. Germany - 17.4% 14. USA - 16.6% 15. South Africa - 16.4% 16. Australia - 16.3% 17. Italy - 16.3% 21. New Zealand - 14.8% 22. Canada - 14.5% 33. Ireland - 9% 35. China - 8.5% 37. Brazil - 7.7% 43. Russia - 5.9% 44. India - 5.5% 54. Japan - 1.4% 56. Qatar - 0.3% 57. Saudi Arabia - 0.1% I’m not surprised that Western European countries top the rankings and Asian countries are at the bottom. But I’m surprised Latvia is so high and I’m slightly surprised that Canada, Ireland and New Zealand are not higher in the rankings. Do you think quotas should be introduced to ensure there are more women company directors? Do you think it makes a difference whether a boss is male or female? Have you ever had sex in a boardroom? At work, I have had both male and female bosses. Generally, I have got on better with female bosses because they listen to me more before making a decision; male bosses tend to tell me what to do more without listening. |

I have had bosses of both genders and seldom makes a difference, assuming they are experienced

I don't think quotas should be introduced....positions should be allocated purely on ability. Never had sex in a boardroom. ~~Anais Nin~~

I don't think there should be any differences between male and female bosses. "NO" to quotas!! Never been in a boardroom, so "no" to that sex! I watched Uruguay defeat England, but that 2nd goal looked offside to me!

1. No, in my profession it would be impossible as there are so few women. Otherwise, advancement should be based on merit only. 2. In my limited experience, no. 3. No, but I've been fucked over more than once!

I'm really disappointed with all the figures below Sweden... I believe the minimum quota should be set at 45percent. Why is that conference being exclusively chaired by men when it concerns women??? Quotas should be introduced to ensure that in company policy-making the interests of female consumers receive fair representation. Since I have a limited experience of being within the workforce, I can't say for certain that I know which sex makes better bosses but I suspect that many women bosses have had to emulate men to punch a hole through the "glass ceiling" and it might only make a difference in a small number of cases. It's possible that some women bosses may me less dictatorial and more democratic regarding the expression of ideas from others. I have only visited two boardrooms in my life and wasn't fucked in either, just bored. I've been in a boardroom a few times. I never find them comfortable places for meetings as many contain the trappings of power.

I'm wary of quotas for similar reasons. I think there are better and more effective ways to increase representation of under-represented groups, eg encouraging applications from under-represented groups, selecting the best media outlet when advertising jobs, mentoring, staff training.

Communication is key in what makes a good boss, though I like it to be two-way communication.

I agree with affirmative action but not quotas. Quotas are quite crude and can cause resentment and even undermine the person benefitting from the quota. But there are many other more subtle and effective ways to get women better represented in the workplace.

There are rather a lot of Canadian female bloggers in blogland. Do you think'd get bored having sex in the boardroom?! Yes, I know it's corny!

Sometimes the job requirements are too restrictive and do not match the demands of the job. I've just drafted a job description but HR added quite unnecessary requirements (eg qualifications, second language proficiency)to it before it could be accepted.
