THE BEAUTIFUL GAME  Above is a group of Brazilian playing football (that’s soccer for my American friends) on a rooftop. Only one more sleep to go before the World Cup starts. As The Pointer Sisters sang, I’m so excited! Despite the World Cup being organised by FIFA, one of the most corrupt outfits in the world, and despite the widespread protests against the World Cup in Brazil, the World Cup will be a special sporting occasion. Below is Christ the Redeemer, an Art Deco statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon rainforest, is one place I would love to visit. Have you visited Brazil?  For the past 25 years my best friend and I have an annual football predictions competition. We predict who is to win each league, who is going to get promoted and relegated, who will win the cups, what player will be the season’s top scorer, what manager will be sacked first, and what position our football team Leeds United will finish. My friend is on top of the predictions contests so far, but there’s a few more decades left for me to catch up! Our predictions contests have no prizes, just bragging rights are at stake. Here is a predictions contest for you to play with an incredible prize at stake. This contest involves correctly predicting the four teams that will make the World Cup semi-finals, the team that wins the World Cup and the player who scores the most goals in the tournament. Whoever gets the most correct predictions will win a very special prize. There are 32 teams competing in the World Cup finals – Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, Iran, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, United States and Uruguay. What four countries will contest the World Cup semi-finals? What country will win the World Cup? What player will score the most goals in the World Cup finals? I am predicting Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Uruguay to reach the last four. I think Uruguay will lift the World Cup trophy, and Uruguay’s Luis Suarez will be the tournament’s top scorer. Your predictions so far are looking very good. Congratulations to Italy for beating England. The worrying thing for England is that they played quite well and still lost!

I have never been to Brazil. Brazil, Spain, Mexico and Germany. Germany. One of the leading Spanish players but I can't remember his name. The one with the highest profile.

Predictions look good, though Spain may struggle now given their defeat to the Netherlands. Ronaldo should score lots of goals.

Sterling had an excellent game for England, as did Sturridge and Welbeck. But England still lost. But it's not over yet though it may be by Thursday.
